Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Music for solo bass is rare, infrequently recorded, and generally heard only by the musician while he is playing his instrument. David Holland, a bassist who has played with both Stan Getz and John Hartford (among many, many others), is ideally suited to the solo format. Not only is he possessed ofa rich, warm tone, but he is also a composer with a sense of drama, texture, and movement.
Each of these eight solo pieces is striking and unique. Holland writes to suit his diverse strengths, and EMERALD TEARS ranges from the lyrical balladry of the title tune to the post-bop festivities of "Spheres". "Solar" is a cover of a piece by Miles Davis--whose band in the late 60's included Holland among its members. Holland also tackles a composition by Anthony Braxton, with whom he worked extensively in the '70s. The piece, titled in Braxton's irreproducible diagrammatic fashion, is sprightly and downright fun--a nice reminder that Braxton, the consummate musical academic, also imbues his writing with considerable wit.
