Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Released in 1973, Mike Oldfield's debut album--a single composition, loosely stringing together a sequence of musical motifs--managed to sell in excess of 16 million copies, effectively kick-starting the Virgin Records empire and bringing its creator, then just twenty years old, a level of critical and commercial success he would never achieve again. Little wonder that he should choose, years later, to revisit his most famous work--though inevitably, this time the stakes were much higher. Good thing, then, that he took so few risks. Like its predecessor, the album unveils a series of musical tableaux, though this time without the slightest pretence of actual thematic development: it's less a single, unified piece, than a medley of pretty folk-rock instrumentals. The mood sits somewhere between foggy Celtic mysticism and pastoral elegy, occasionally pausing for a moment of unexpected light relief (the bizarre whimsy of "Altered State"). Unlike the original, however, it sustains its pleasures more or less evenly across the entire composition. --Andrew McGuire

Customer Reviews

One of the best albums ever.5
I can safely say this is my favourite album of all time. I've loved this since I was a kid, and will never grow tired of hearing it. If I had to streamline my entire CD collection down to one disc, this would be it. It's just beautiful.

More tubular delights4
Anyone who finds the first Tubular Bells a masterpiece is sure to find this long-awaited sequel just as good. The recurring themes of TB 1 are all re-worked here with similar instrumentation and merged together into a continuous piece of music.
With TB2 however the themes are allowed to develop just that little bit longer making the whole thing more flowing and easier to listen to. Added to that is a much better production than TB1 as no doubt more time and money was spent on the project. This is not TB1 re-recorded like Tubular Bells 2003 was but is a whole new album using new material in a familiar and well-loved format. At this price you will be delighted.

Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells Vol.2 - One in a million!5
Now at the ripe old age of twenty six I am busy tracking down music from youth, and Mike Oldfiled Tubular Bells was definately on my list of 'must haves' My Dad used to play it whenever he was home early from work and always on the weekends so happy memories flood back having recently acquired the CD for my own collection. It's one of those CD's that you can nearly always listen to whatever the time or day of the week, better still it's not an album you have to mess around skipping tracks searching for the ones you prefer over others as they all flow and are all equally unique...meaning you can hit replay as soon as it comes to the end and enjoy it all over again! Certainly one of a kind in respect of interesting, satisfying and clever composing - 'Mike Oldfield' will be one of those names you will never forget after playing this CD. Play it softly for rainy days when reading a book or play it loud on sunny weekends! It's simply a must have for any CD collection no matter how large or small. ENJOY!!
