Amazon.co.uk Review
At the time of his death in 1997, the Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the acknowledged master of qawwali, a classical form derived from the mystical Islamic traditions of Sufism which, although ostensibly devotional, includes elements of the ecstatic and profane: sacred love as metaphor for earthly desire. The song structures, traditionally consisting of long, hypnotically repetitious instrumentals which serve as a setting for vocal improvisations around a brief lyric, are closer to jazz than to western classical music: the CD's 18-minute final track is a wonderful example of the qawwal's slow build-up to a dynamic, ecstatically inventive crescendo. Rapture compiles music from 15 years of recordings for the UK label Oriental Star, and is a useful introduction to the earlier, more traditional examples of Nusrat's huge body of work--the last few years of his life saw him collaborating with Canadian guitarist and producer Michael Brook and with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (for the Dead Man Walking soundtrack). With the exception of "Sab Vird Karo Allah Allah" which suffers from a syrupy, Bollywood-esque production, the songs gathered here are thrilling testament to the huge range and dynamic power of Nusrat's voice--evidence enough for his status not only in Pakistan, but the world over. --Burhan Tufail

CD Description
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan epitomises qawwali music. The qawwal was developed by the sect of liberated mystics of Sufism andis at once devotional and ecstatic. RAPTURE draws from recordings Nusrat made in the 1980s and '90s, and showcases the breadth and scope of this now legendary singer's repertoire, including pulsating, ancient religious chants, and beautiful ghazals, or love songs.
In the mid-1990s, Nusrat was exposed to Western artists, including Madonna and Hootie And The Blowfish. Attempting to assimilate this music, he performs one song on RAPTURE that includes a rock backbeat, a pop melody, and even an electric guitar solo. The result is compelling; "Sab Vird Karo Allah Allah" is more resonant and affecting than many of the sources that inspired it. Other highlights include the mesmerising "Man Atkeia Beparwah De Naal",and the powerful "Un Ka Andaz-E-Karam".

Great Second Nusrat CD purchase:"Brilliant Album" 5
I bought my first Nusrat CD in June 1998, entitled Love songs by real world although I did have a compilation of his best hits on an audio cassette in the 1990s one of the tracks called `Nit Khair Manson Sohnia Main Teri' from his Shahen-Shah Album (my seventh Nusrat CD purchase upto early 1999) was a classic traditional track is still play on radio shows/programmes. The rapture was my second Nusrat CD purchase in July 1998. I was enthralled by the mixture of rock back beat, melodic pop which blended in nicely with the electric guitar on its own to great effect. The classic roots track: "Man Atkeia Beparwah De Naal" and the spiritually uplifting tracks "Sab Vird Karo Allah Allah", "Un Ka Andaz-E-Karam" and "Dam Dam Karo Fareed" dedicated to a Famous Muslim saint in India. Another of my favourite tracks was a sort of "lovers rock" from a Qawwali/Bollywood style type track was "Tumhen Dil lagi Bhool Jani Paregee" which indeed inspired Bollywood directors to make a film with a similar title & song a few years later!

Overall, it is an excellent CD by Nascente. For those who want World Roots tracks then the compilation by Rough Guide & produced by World Music Network: entitled: World Roots is worth buying and which has the famous & mesmerizing track "Man Atkeia Beparwah De Naal" on this 1999 CD.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is clearly a unique individual, capable of producing a sound unlike any other I've every heard. I felt like I was looking for this album my whole life and only recently discovered it and him. Perhaps there is beauty in the fact that his music is hidden to most.Sab Vird Karo Allah Allah is truly uplifting. This music transcends you to another place, taking you through every emotional height in its wake. Explosive. GO Buy It.
