TONI BRAXTON is a smashing debut. One of the best vocaliststo break through the glut of R&B divas, the sultry Braxton gives the pretenders to the diva throne cause to re-evaluatetheir careers. It's going to be hard to compete against this stylist.
Concrete songwriting also helps the album riseabove the others. Songs like "Another Sad Love Song" and "Seven Whole Days" are perfect vehicles for her dynamic vocal gymnastics, while the subdued ballad "Best Friend" comes to a slow boil, after simmering for 4 and 1/2 minutes.
Braxton's unique voice combined with original, impossible-to-label songs like the sexy standout "Breathe Again" show what magic first-rate producers like L.A. Reid and Babyface can do with an extraordinary singer. The proof is in the sales and the awards generated from this album; Braxton won the coveted1994 Grammy Award for "Best New Artist".
Braxton caresses her lyrics with jazzy, Anita Baker-ish embellishments, slurred phrasing, breathy come-ons, and leaping octaves. She swings, sways, wails and wallops her way through this outstanding showcase.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
The perfect match-up of singer, song, and producer is a wondrous thing, and no more so in the producer-driven realm of black pop. Such a wonderful moment was the debut from Toni Braxton who, in Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, had a uber-lord who tapped into the dark, yet radio-friendly recess of her soul. These days, Toni's a sleek, Diane Warren-mouthing style puppet, but back, before she was re-made as a plastic pop star, Braxton gave nobility to heartbreak with classics like "Breathe Again". Her debut remains one of the best of the 1990s. --Amy Linden

Soulful debut album that still stands strong
This is a very strong debut album from Toni Braxton, which still stands strong today, 15 years later. This album produced no less than 7 hits in the USA and 4 here in the UK. This album brought Toni to the top of the charts and by 1994 the songs had captured millions of hearts all over the world. These songs are definitely on the more soulful side of R&B, and ranks among her best to date. Who can resist the smooth but powerful "Breathe Again" or "You Mean The World To Me". Not only has the songs got a lot of soul but they have a lot of class as well. There is not one bad song on this CD although some songs are of course better than others. It has got the Babyface touch all over it but who cares when it sounds as good as this. It was the perfect marriage between songwriter/producer and artist at the time. I would recommend this album to everyone who enjoys soul music à la Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion. You will not be disappointed.
Very good. All the songs had a positive vibe about them.
This album is a very good example of what Toni Braxton is capable of.None of the songs sounded the same but all had a good beat.
