Product Description

Easily the most angular and eccentric Genesis album, FOXTROT is where Peter Gabriel's idiosyncratic lyricism bears fullfruit. "Get 'em Out By Friday" and "Watcher of the Skies" brim with Gabriel's quirky combination of poetics, politics, and philosophy, and with the tricky time signatures and instrumental flights that are early-Genesis trademarks.
Though these are some of the most powerful, memorable songs in the Genesis catalogue, FOXTROT's centrepiece is the 23-minute epic "Supper's Ready", a prog-rock classic that moves through several sections, shifting tempo, mood, and tone colours as it weaves its rich, complex tale. This composition would become Genesis diehards' most beloved tune, known as a concert favourite for years. SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND may be the definitive Genesis album, but FOXTROT runs a close second, and is just as much of a gem in the '70s progressive rock crown.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Foxtrot marked a decisive point in Genesis's career. An emerging art-rock band who were building up a growing cult following with a busy touring schedule, this album was an artistic and commercial landmark: It was their first album to chart, reaching Number 12 (rather bizarrely, it made it to Number One in Italy!). Including the classic "Watcher Of The Skies" and Peter Gabriel's whimsically compassionate slice-of-life "Get 'Em Out By Friday", the highlight was the ambitious side-long epic "Supper's Ready". Comprising seven linked subsections, it is a story of two lovers and the struggle between good and evil; certainly it was the most innovative and entertaining piece the band had produced to date. Depending on your perspective, the relatively low production values of the recording could be said to detract somewhat from the impact of the album or to add a pleasantly rough edge to what might otherwise be a somewhat prim sound. --James Swift

A Real Classic4
This is a really good album from Genesis full of great songs especially Watcher Of The Skies and Get Em Out By Friday. The band have a great tight sound and Peter Gabriels vocals bring it all together.Reason I only give this great album 4 stars is not because of the music but the poor remastering on this epic. The sound is very basy and quiet seems to dominate its way thru album.Feel its about time for a new remaster here this album desreves much better sound quality than this remastered edition, anyway if you like early Genesis this is a cracker for your collection also check out Selling England By The Pound,Lamb lies Down On Broadway and Nursey Chrime all great albums and highly recommended for your collection.Sorry to say this but the remastering on these fantastic albums is also very poor and sub standard,so if you can suffer the poor quality of sound, musically I highly recommend these albums.I hope the record companies look at doing decent future remasters here cos these great works deserve better.
Hope review is of help
Ps.This my favoutite Genesis Album.

Excellent5
As a fan of Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Rush and Gentle Giant I kept being prompted to listen to Genesis, hearing about how great they were. This surprised me because as far as I knew they were a duff 80's pop band with MIDI drums and lots of power ballads.
I decided to pick up Foxtrot because it seemed to be everyone's favourite and was dead cheap on Amazon. Great decision; this album is astounding, a prog masterpiece of lyrical story telling, structural complexity and is awash with mellotron and organ sounds.
The level of musicianship is what you'd expect from any great prog band, Peter Gabriel has an excellent voice (much to my surprise) and Phil 'Power Ballad and MIDI drums,' Collins is a MUCH better drummer than I had thought.
The real stars here are Tony and Steve, who really shine on this record.
My favourite songs are 'Get em out by Friday,' and the haunting 'Can Utility and the Coastliners,' two wonderful songs that should be heard by any prog fan.
The standout track however is the 23 minute epic, 'Suppers Ready,' which will blow your mind, its kind of like a bizarre meld of 'On thin Ice,' by Floyd, 'I talk to the Wind,' by Crimson and 'Ritual,' by Yes. You have to hear it to believe it, and I very much recommend that you do...BUY THIS RIGHT NOW.

WOW!5
I have many classic rock albums and must admit ive never really bother with Genesis, not into their 80's/90's, Gabriel, Phil Collins solo careers did nothing for me :( but when I came across a track from the Genesis of the 70's! It caught my attention! so I decided to buy an early album! it was Foxtrot! and what can I say! this album should have been in my collection years ago :) this album is right up there with the great rock albums :) brilliant, creative and stunning, strong from start to finish. I love it when I find an un-discovered gem :) I think I'll order Selling England By The Pound next :) can't wait :)
