Customer Reviews
maybe a little too perfect! is that possible?
after yazoo and the stunning debut "alf" the second album is polished to perfection! i love it...alison is on record as saying she doesn't like it as its not what she is about...
"alf" is faultless...this album isn't and i can't put my finger on it! is it too pop! too perfect! is it a bit too commercial!
track by track
"weak in the presence of beauty" is a timeless classic and the 2nd single from the album..it reached no.6 in the uk but 20 years later its still on the radio all the time...pure pop perfection 10/10
"ordinary girl" was the 3rd single and only reached no.43..a crime! one of my all time favourites! let me tell you a little story i was 19 when it was released and my sister left home in durham to live in london..and i felt like i had lost my right arm...the lyrics summed up the whole event..waving her off on the train...feeling lost...why did you have to leave! end of story! 10/10
"you got me wrong this time" has great lyrics and is produced to perfection..delivered in true moyet fashion 9/10
"without you" is pure pop...very catchy maybe a bit too happy clappy pop..its catchy and memorable...but i think it was this sort of music that alsison was fighting against as an artist 8/10
"sleep like breathing" was the 4th single and didnt even reach the top 75...its a strange track...showing more of "hoodoo"..nice enough but it doesn't go anywhere 6/10
"is this love" was the first single and reached no.3 its another timeless classic track..a classic 10/10
"blow wind blow" is a haunting epic...a great track than stuns you to silence 10/10
"glorious love" is another pop track that is brilliant..could have been a huge hit single 10/10
"no give away" is another pure pop track...its good...a bit of a singalong despite great lyrics its a throwaway pop track 8/10
"stay" well they say say the best till last! amazing! a slow epic that just builds and builds....alison has never sounded better 100/10
a stunning album..however it is marred by the fact that alison didnt feel comfortable with it...that she was losing her soul to record company pressure. its a hard one...her more pop solo albums are stunning and she sounds amazing!!!! the albums where she records her true self haven,t been commercial successes but she is happier with them..as a listener i want more of this
A Classic
I was given this "album" on my 21st birthday, 21 years ago and recently in a fit of nostalgia, bought the cd hoping it would still sound good, but thinking it unlikely as so much time has passed. I am amazed and pleased to say it sounds even better than I remember, it's a testament to the class and quality of Moyet's talent - fantastic.
Second masterpiece from Moyet!
Not many could have followed up such a massive success after their debut album, but Alison Moyet made it all look so easy! 'Raindancing' was her second success in three years and every bit 'Alf's' equal; from the 'catchy' to the 'sublime' with 'Blow Wind Blow' this album is 'complete'. Some major hits on this - ironically, the potential that should have given her many more. This album should have spawned her no less than six chart toppers in my opinion, with numbers like; 'Weak In The Presence Of Beauty', the dramatic and catchy ' Ordinary Girl' that you just wanted to go on and on, 'Without You', the 'hypnotic' 'Sleep Like Breathing', (a duet with Dave Freeman) 'Is This Love' (that would surprise everybody by only peaking at number three) and 'When I Say (No Give-away)' - all these should have done much better - for those of which were released as singles, but somehow they did not seem to get enough air-play at the time. Ms. Moyet also released 12" versions of many of the aforementioned, which were truly sensational!
This is an album that is totally complete in itself.
