punk-pop moments from Dayton Ohio's finest
They've had mild success with their recent Do the Collapse Album, but it doesn't stand up like this baby does. Sure the quality is scratchy, low-fi, but the songs are par excellence. Robert Pollard must be the worlds prolific song writer, every one is a gem but some gems shine brighter than others and this album will turn you blind.
I've listened to this albuum more that Sgt Peppere, Pet Sounds, Stone Roses, Miles Davis Kind of blue - all the so called classics. This is the GBV hall mark album. Buy it, see them live and enjoy the spirit of one of the most underated yet talented song writers to come out of America's Mid West. After this seek out Under the Bushes...Under the stars, then Mag Earwig then the other 10 + albums, solo records and countless singles and E.P's. All hail Bob Pollard -n The Self proclaimed Professor of Rock!
GBV : Other Worldly Wonders.
Alien Lanes is not only the best Guided By Voices album, it is the best indie rock album ever made. Only Sebadoh's 'Bakesale' and Pavement's 'Wowee Zowee' come close in terms of songwriting and inventiveness. If you have heard people rave about Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices and don't understand what all the fuss is about, then you probably haven't heard this album. Unlike a lot of the superficial nonsense that is forced upon our ears by mainstream media, this is an album you could live inside for months. Highly recommended!
