Product Description

Since crashing the gates with 1993's TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, Sheryl Crow's brand of melodic pop has won her some Grammys and kept her constantly on the road. On the followup album, the one-time background singer retains her sweet delivery laced with gruff edges, while painting her sunny sound with darker shadings. Quirky characters and situations continueto inhabit Crow's songs, whether it's holy rollers and government conspirators ("Maybe Angels") or a homeless evangelist proselytising outside a supermarket ("Hard To Make A Stand").
While Crow could easily content herself by writing about assorted oddballs, real-life manifests itself assuredly on SHERYL CROW. Her trip to entertain troops in war-torn Bosnia is reflected in the wasted virtues and exploding shells of "Redemption Day". And in "Love Is A Good Thing", she sings pointedly about firearm sales and their consequences.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sceptics who attributed the success of Sheryl Crow's 1994 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club, to a combination of Crow's seductive good looks and a shrewd choice of collaborators have been effectively silenced by the range and depth of songs and performances on her self-produced, pointedly self-titled sequel. Playing guitars and keyboards, and building a triumphant, layered vocal style, Crow is tough as nails and drolly soulful on the deft "Change", as noteworthy for Crow's crafty lyrics ("Hello, it's me, I'm not at home/ If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone...") as for its solid, mid-tempo groove. "Maybe Angels", "If It Makes You Happy", and "Everyday Is a Winding Road" are only the most familiar highlights in a varied and absorbing set that argues Crow is no one's invention but her own. --Sam Sutherland

Sherl's best album to date5
I have all Sheryl Crow's albums and I would say this is the best. Inc :- Every Day Is A Winding Road, If It make's You Happy and A Change Would Do You Good.

I would also recommend Detours, C'mon C'mon and Tuesday Night Music Club.

If you like depressing go for Wild Flowers and The Globe Session. I don't particulaly like these one's myself. But other fan's might.

Mid tempo rock4
This is not an immediate album, it takes a while to appreciate its considerable worth. The music is mostly mainstream rock of the mid-tempo variety embellished with other styles and the lyrics are full of references to pop culture, sometimes witty, always clever. The album opens with the heavy track Maybe Angels, which is followed by the catchy pop-rock of A Change Will Do You Good.

The lovely tender ballad Home is a folky interlude, Sweet Rosalyn is a tuneful rock ballad and If It Makes You Happy a powerful anthemic song where her voice really soars. One of the more profound songs is titled Redemption Day, a soft rock ballad with poignant lyrics. The gritty guitar and gripping rock riff of Hard To Make A Stand make the song stand out, but the most melodious number is the memorable Everyday Is A Winding Road with its singalong chorus.

The Book is slow and introspective whilst Ordinary Morning has a complex arrangement with jazzy lounge and rock sections. The country tinged Sad Sad World is another of my favourites with its melancholy tune and introspective lyrics. On first impression, the album may sound a bit plodding but repeated listens will reveal some truly great songs. One lilting uptempo rocker would have raised the album to 5 star status!

An Upcoming Star!4
This 1996 album shows a lot of promise in who is now known as Sheryl Crow. The sum of the thirteen songs is played somewhat too safe and a tad clunky, but she finds herself in a few gems. Almost like a female "Eagles", Ms. Crow exhibits talent in many styles.

"Ordinary Mornings" has her screaming the blues with a great guitar lead that matches her vocals. "Torch Song" makes for a good bluesy number also with a nice guitar lead. If you're looking for a little country-western rock, "Redemption Day" easily satisfies that area. She could have done an entire album on that subject.

"Hard To Make A Stand" and "Love Is A Good Thing" are MOR but still provide a semblance of good funk to keep anyone satified. Only on the hit, "Everyday Is A Winding Road", Does Sheryl Crow come into her own - and it's a great single that set her off in the direction she now follows. It's upbeat, dancey and cheery.

This may not be her best stuff, but it sure has enough on it to make it worth the purchase.
