Once En Vogue proved that old-fashioned gospel-soul female harmonies could create sparks with modern street beats, every record company went looking for young singers to hook up with new-jack-swing producers. Those efforts bear fruit with SWV, which stands for Sisters with Voices, and the three teenaged singers from New York really do have great pipes, capable of a distinctive sound that can dominate a production rather than the other way around. Cheryl "Coko" Gordon, the trio's lead singer, boasts a great range that allows her to sound tough and sultry in her gritty alto, and romantic and flirty in her trilling soprano. SWV's debut album includes 13 different songs, plus two alternate mixes, and the best tracks are the 10 written and produced by Brian Alexander Morgan, who knows how to create the melodies that all great harmonies must start with. The first single, "Right Here," features a very funky, push-and-pull rhythm track, but the three singers reclaim the song with harmonies that are very percussive themselves but with lots of melody and romantic personality as well. The single, "Weak," is a ballad that allows Gordon to confess her infatuated weakness without ever sounding like a weakling as she hits the beats confidently and purrs in anticipation. --Geoffrey Himes

Supreme RnB girl group
Before Destiny's Child rocked the world, there were a cluster of RnB girl groups. TLC, Brownstone, En Vogue...and SWV. This trio blazed a trail in Black music with their debut album, which featured phenomenal tunes such as I'm So Into You, Right Here and Weak. These were released as singles and only Right Here (the Human Nature remix) was successful in the UK.
Unfortunately and inexplicably, all their other tunes didn't register as highly. A damn shame because when you listen to 'Sisters With Voices', you realise how fantastic they were... their harmonies were TIGHT... they had brilliant tunes and once you listen to 'It's About Time' you remember how incredible RnB music used to be.
It's About Time you purchased this album
If you're reading this and you don't have 'It's About Time', why not? There can be no excuse for ignoring one of the seminal RnB albums of the 1990s. SWV set the RnB world alight when this album came out at the end of 1992. It spawned the singles, 'I'm So Into You', 'Right Here', 'Weak' and 'Downtown' all of which made the UK top 40. The beats are infectious, the melodies delightful, the harmonies tight, and the vocals of lead singer Coko are nothing short of sensational. The album kicks off with a wonderful acapella version of 'Anything' where Coko really shines, before launching into all the hits. The ballads are suitably heartfelt and reflect a youthful desire for love but are sung with considerable maturity. The album does not peter out despite the fact that it starts so spectacularly. Little gems like 'It's About Time' and 'Coming Home' are tucked away at the end of the album showing the girls' sensual side and really rounding things off satisfactorily. I do not believe that SWV managed to capture the youthful exuberance and classy production on their subsequent albums. This album is them at their best. There are no guests here, no fillers. This really feels like the girls have grabbed ownership of their material and taken the opportunity to shine. Don't miss it. It's about time.
