On LOVE SCENES, Diana Krall utilises the same trio format she used on her critically acclaimed ALL FOR YOU. And it's easy to understand why: the simple instrumentation--Krall plusguitarist Russell Malone and bassist Chrisian McBride--is the perfect setting for her sultry voice and relaxed piano playing. She offers 12 delightful interpretations of well-chosen, romance-related standards.
The three musicians have awonderful rapport (both Malone and McBride have played on previous Krall albums), and each tune exhibits an easy, effortless swing. Krall' s piano playing is sensitive and lyricalon the ballads, and right in the groove on the uptempo numbers. Malone's full, rich tone blends perfectly with Krall's piano accompaniment, and McBride's formidable bass playing punctuates the trio's every nuance on this drumless date.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall's luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s. Augmented by spare but skilful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the CD's 12 selections, from Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky)", which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away from Me". Her swing is artfully subdued ("All or Nothing at All"), and her wry, expressive approach to "Peel Me a Grape" is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You" and "Garden in the Rain". Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind. --Terry Wood

Krall at her best
This is the kind of album I'd like Diana Krall to make all the time. Utilising the combo of piano, guitar and bass, Krall has never sounded more natural and sensuous than on this choice selection of great songs. While her orchestral efforts with Johnny Mandel have their merits, I do think she is most effective when presented in this less "produced" setting, where her beguiling voice is brought to the fore and her excellent piano stylings have some room to breathe. I sometimes find Krall's renditions a little sonambulent, but here even the most languid ballad has movement and pulse ("Garden in the Rain", an overlooked but beautiful song by Carroll Gibbons, is a superb example). We also find her in a playful mood on "Peel Me a Grape" (she doesn't often delve into comedy songs).
This is Diana Krall at her considerable best.
It's like she's singing right into your ears...
I have all of Diana's albums, but this is in my opinion by far the best because it really showcases her voice. She is in my opinion the best jazz vocalist of our times. What I especially love about this album are the simple arrangements & accompaniment of just double bass & jazz guitar - it makes it far more intimate, warm and it provides more space for Diana's brilliant vocals so you really have the impression she is singing just to you - right in your ears. The audio quality on this album is also just fantastic. If you love Diana but don't have this album yet, then put this on the top of your wishlist, you won't be disappointed.
An Excellent DVD Audio Disc !
Krall is superb, and DVD audio quality just matches her superb recordings.
Won't repeat all the other reviews below, just to say that the DVD audio disc is Superb if you have a decent system to justify all the information her recording engineers have put on the disc.
