Amazon.co.uk Review
Sooliman Ernest Rogers passed away in 1994 at the age of 67, shortly after the release of this mellow lullaby of an album. Born in Sierra Leone, Rogie early on discovered the convivial, melodious pleasures of the regional "palm wine" music he perfected. Once known as "the Jimmie Rodgers of Sierra Leone", Rogie's country-tinged baritone inspired many competitors before he took off for the United States in 1973, eventually ending up in England. What Dead Men lacks in diversity Rogie more than compensates for with soul. Backed by the great double bassist Danny Thompson and guitarist Alfred "Kari" Bannerman, Rogie conflates country, blues, and gospel in laid-back, deep-grain tracks such as "Koneh Pelawoe (Please Open Your Heart)", the country ballad "A Time in My Life", "African Gospel", and the dank title track. --Richard Gehr

Palm wine music
This was my introduction to Sierra Leone's 'palm wine' music. So called because it instills the langour and mellow good feeling associated with that mildly alcoholic drink. This is feel-good music to banish blues on a rainy day. Pity the singer is now dead.
Highly recommended as a starter
YOU WILL LOVE IT FOR SURE!!! This is my very first trial of world music. I LOVE African music ever since! Rogie' s deep and tender voice can make you feel so relax, dreamy and warm. It's just marvelous!!! I like to have it as the background music when I do some reading before going to bed. It's not that sort of easy-listening music to bore you after a while. It's quite lively to make you tap your feet with the music. However, it's not that sort of dancing music to make you jump out of the sofa and dance like crazy or whatsoever. If you want me to describe the album with one word, it is 'pure'. Pure voice, pure feeling can make you feel pure good! Go and get it and you will thank me. *_^
