SOUL CLASSICS ON FIRE
This compilation collects the cream of the output on the labels that Holland/Dozier/Holland formed after they left Motown, i.e. Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant.
The output on these labels have sadly been overlooked for years, but this compilation proves that many of the singles released on these labels were just as strong as those Holland/Dozier/Holland wrote for Motown.
The album begins with a two amazing soul classics, "Band of Gold" and "Give Me Just A Little More Time", and even if the rest of the tracks aren't that familiar to you, this is high quality soul throughout.
Other standout tracks are Laura Lee's blazing divorce anthem "Rip Off", the funk of Chairmen of the Board's "Finders Keepers" and Glass House's "Crumbs off the Table" and Freda Payne's protest against the Vietnam war, "Bring the Boys Home".
If you like 60's soul, this is a must. It is superior to Sequel's other compilations of tracks from these labels; "Invictus Unconquered/best of Invictus" and "Cherish What Is Dear To You/Best of Invictus 2" are rather patchy in comparison, and the sleeve design is more attractive on this compilation as well.
If you want to dig deeper, try "Invictus Club Classics" which compiles more obscure tracks, even if "Sliced Tomatoes" by the Just Brothers is more than surely familiar to you.
