This stellar 1995 Christmas album is not your typical release of holiday standards. In fact, Luther helped pen most of the songs on this album. His originals include the excellent"With a Christmas Heart", "This Is Christmas", and "A Kiss for Christmas". But for those with an allegiance to the standards, "My Favorite Things" and "O' Come All Ye Faithful" are duly included among these 10 lovely tracks. Well-known bassist/arranger/producer Marcus Miller plays on some of the tracks, while well-coifed '80s rock balladeer Richard Marx co-wrote "Every Year, Every Christmas". For R&B fans, it's hardto do much better than THIS IS CHRISTMAS.

Seasonal AND really Soulful...
The journalist Craig Seymour (in his bio on Luther) didn't rate this album, so I bought it with some trepidation.
Well, I don't think Craig coud have been more wrong. Some of Luther's vocals on these tracks are amongst his BEST ever performances. As ever, he sounds incredible, but with a Gospel intensity on the ballads; at times he's truly singing the chandelier right off the ceiling !!
It must have been electrifying in the studio. And his jazz-funk take on My Favourite Things is worth the price of admission alone... All the usual crew are there (Cissy, Cindy, Brenda, Lisa, Kevin, Marcus, Nat et al).
It's an excellent Christmas album that's loaded with soul plus some funny moments; listen out for the comic exchange between Luther and Brenda White-King on Mistletoe Jam.
The man was pure class all the way; the finest singer of our generation who continues to set the standard for male vocalists. Treat yourself.
