Customer Reviews

its great when you're a mondays fan...yeah5
If you like Happy Mondays in any form you'll probably like this. Its got all the classics. That idiot who doesn't know why they put more than one version of Wrote for luck obviously has never seen them live, the dance version being the tune they ALWAYS played last. And Step On not being much of a tune! I beg to differ. The Mondays were pioneers with the likes of Weatherall and Oakenfold. Regardless of wether Pills and Thrills had commercial success, it's still a great Album and just because its successful doesn't mean that it's commercial. Anyway, this is still a great album wether in the car flat out(volume) or at home smoking with pals.
Rant over, Mick out.

The Mondays album for those with terminal "Lazyitis"4
Well for a start it's an erroneous title because half the stuff on this album weren't even hits. I'm quite prepared to be corrected but I'm sure songs like "Mad Cyril" never got within sniffing distance of the charts. So surely a more accurate title would have been best of, although as is usual with Best Ofs, the material included would be a very subjective choice.
Anyway putting pedantry and semantics aside this is a decent enough starting point if you are new to The Happy Mondays, containing as it does, many of their seminal numbers. Not sure it's necessary to include two versions of the brilliant "Wrote for Luck". The original version off "Bummed" is far superior to the numerous remixes including the one here. Nor is it necessary to have an extra mix of "Step On" which is an over rated song anyway. The more commercial sound adopted for "Thrills, Pills and Bellyaches" didn't suit The Mondays anyway. The swamp stew melange of funk, reggae and reverb soaked rock that dominated "Bummed " saw the band at their absolute peak and more of that album would be welcome. "Country Song" is a glaring absentee, as is "Fat Lady Wrestlers" but as I said before it's all subjective. And why is there a remix version of the glorious "Lazyitis" which urinates over this version from stratospheric heights.
Their first John Cale produced album "Squirrel G Man" etc is also under represented but that's not too surprising as it's madcap structures and impenetrable rhythmic verve would be too excessive for many who will purchase this album. Any album that has songs the quality of "WFL", "Kinky Afro" and the excellent remix of "Hallelujah" within it's shiny grooves has a lot going for it but my advice would be to buy "Bummed" first, then maybe "Thrills ,Pills and Bellyaches", and then once you've done that move on to the Black Grape stuff. Like all Greatest Hits packages this is for the uninitiated, completist or plain lazy. Nothing wrong with that of course, I avail myself of the odd Greatest Hits or best of package now and then but now I've pointed you in the right direction there is no excuse. Or is that "Lazyitis" more contagious than I thought?

Great Band, Great Compilation.5
Despite owning 18 or so Happy Mondays CD's (singles, albums etc), the Greatest Hits compilation is a worthy purchase. All their main tracks from numerous albums stuck onto one disk, is, pretty convenient especially if like me you don't have an autochanger in your car!!
Only real critisism is there are some favourite tracks missing (maybe not hits) such as "Baby Big Head", "Clap Your Hands" and "Tokoloshe Man".
Just to end, Happy Mondays kicked Stone Roses asses!!!!
