The multi-talented dancer/singer/actress Jennifer Lopez fulfilled a lifelong dream with the release of ON THE 6, an album that gets its title from the subway she took from her Bronx home to Manhattan for dance training and auditions. The overnight hit "If You Had My Love" helped show the world Jennifer's emotive and vulnerable vocal style. With the collaborative help of Emilio Estefan Jr., the dance rhythms and salsa brass of "Let's Get Loud" are refreshing and infectious. In the bittersweet "Should've Never", her sultry spoken-Spanish vocals make the song incredibly sexy in its desperation. "Feelin' So Good" has a hip-hop feel, thanks to songwriting and production help from the omnipresent Sean "Puffy" Combs.Collecting a debt from her appearance in one of his music videos, Marc Anthony makes a surprise appearance on "No Me Ames". With a seamless skill at singing ballads, R & B, and dance music, Jennifer Lopez shows great promise for the musical chapter of her amazing career.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Actress Jennifer Lopez's debut album fails in its attempt to provide a worthy musical backdrop to her much-discussed diva-esque image. Over the course of 13 songs, On the 6 displays barely a glimmer of the verve, poise, and sensuality of her screen performances in the likes of Out of Sight. With little vocal talent to rely on, Lopez generally seems content to ape Madonna's middle register like any happy radio listener. Similarly, several of the tracks here seem too rooted in the Latin-lite clichés of "La Isla Bonita". With practice--more Lopez CDs will surely follow in the wake of 6's success--the star might develop into a singer worth reckoning with, but for now she stands as a wonderful actress and a musical artist with an unengaging album to her name. --Rickey Wright

Good, but she can and does better
Jennifer Lopez's debut album is a mixture of different styles and sounds but is fairly subtle in doing this. There's pop, latino, rnb and a bit of dance added into some of the songs (especially Waiting Fot Tonight). If you like your pop music you should like this.
However, I only gave this album 3 stars because no way are all the tracks good. They can get all to samey, but then again there are quite a lot of songs on the record.
I have about 5 songs that I really really like, these are;
- Let's get loud, a fiesty girl powered latino dance number.
- Feelin' so good, has a heavy, pure Rnb vibe and features rapper Fat Joe. Third single to be released.
- Baila, probably the most lively and energetic song out of the lot, is strongly influnced by Jennifer's latino backgound. Totally amazing and completely different from anything else on the album. Took me a few listens to get used to it though.
- If you had my love, debut single for the singer/actress and the one you've most likely heard before. Is first and foremost a pop song but is Rnb driven. The kind of song you can't but help to singalong to.
- Waiting for tonight, my (current) fave song. Is always changing between this and If u had my love. Her second song that was released as a single. I love this song because I can listen to it again & again and to me it always sounds fresh and new, not several years old like it is. Is a latino dance song, and just makes me want to get and dance to the beat.
If you are reading this review and are possibly thinking of buying this album, of course I'm going to say buy it. If you like your pop music, latino and/or maybe dance I recommend it. And as I chose this album to do my first review that should say something too!x
Urban Classic. J-Lo Should Not Have Left This Style Behind.
This was the debut LP of now-modern day icon Jennifer Lopez, was released way back in 1999 when the young starlet was not much more than a wannabe. Now, nearly 6 years on, such a time seems difficult to remember. Lopez, if of course, one of the most famous women in the world. Interestingly, a quick listen to this album, even if it is six years old, reveals just how well it's aged. The best of the LP still sound fresh and exciting even now. In particular, the album's lead single "If You Had My Love" could easily be last week's #1 Urban Single. It sounds amazing to this day. Frankly, I don't believe this is down to the talent of the artist. Columbia Records got some of the best and most established producers on board with this album, something that's reflected in the quality of the tracks here.
Moving on, and a real change in musical style, "Waiting For Tonight", another big hit from the release, sounds equally impressive. Club mogul and professional DJ Eric Kupper had a hand in this track, something that is displayed through the sharp and modern House/Club vibe of the song. Other big favourites of the album are "Let's Get Loud" - a Gloria Estefan inspired latin-flavoured party stormer, that despite it's unoriginal lyrics and sound, still manages to hit all the right spots - and with style. "Should've Never" - the standard pop ballad that no urban album of this style would be complete without it - is, happily, more than just a filler. With it' slick production and solid lyrics it manages to pull of the difficult task of slushy ballad without turning into a sloppy mess.
Overall, this is probably still Lopez' best musical release to date. The key to it's success is it's ability to skilfully and seemlessley move between styles - from R&B and Pop, to Hip-Hop and Dance. It's all done in such a way that makes the whole album a joy to listen to. The album shows promise on J-Lo's part, but in all honesty is probably more testimant to it's producers skills than anything else. It's a shame that subsequent releases by the Hollywood diva didn't live up to these standards.
