Customer Reviews
Mad not to like it!!!
This album should have been released in 1976 rather than 1978 and you can tell. However, for a debut album the level of musicianship is quite outstanding.
Magnum's influences are quite obvious. 'In The Beginning' and 'All That Is Real' could be Yes, 'Baby Rock Me' could be Queen and there are other tracks on here which remind me of Styx. The title track and 'Invasion' are instant classics and my favourite is album closer 'All Come Together'.
Points lost for Jake Commander's duff production and the funk sound of 'Lords Of Chaos' (the live version on 'Marauder' is far superior). Good stuff though. If had been released in 76 rather than 78, it would have probably made at least the top 20.
Early Promise
Magnum introduces themselves to the world with a suitably raw debut. They, obviously, had not found their feet completely with the style of music they were to perfect on later albums such as On A Storytellers Night, but some great highlights are Kingdom of Madness, Universe and Lords of Chaos.
One of the reference magnum albums
Along with Magnum II, this is a must-have. This was the first "no gaps between songs" LP I bought, many years ago. It's not strongly conceptual or pretentious (as you might expect from progressive rock albums) and, the songs are strong, well performed, and arranged superbly. The whole album just "works". I find it more melodic than the sometimes abruptly tight Magnum II, but that doesn't detract from it, merely making it complement that album very well. A seminal Magnum album. Strong buy.
