Fantastic but incomplete
Having been a Vangelis fan for 20 years I was overjoyed when I heard this was being released a few years ago. I had previously purchased the orchestrated version and always wanted an original. However I was sadly a little dissappointed. There ARE a lot of tracks on the CD but also a few that arent in the movie...there are several great tracks from the movie which arent in the CD and really annoying voice overs. It is still some of his best work but to say it's a soundtrack of the film is misleading.
Incomplete.
Well, this soundtrack is good for a quick listen, but for film fans who adore the film it's not going to whet your appetite. The themes are either cut short or present in an edited form, and the majority of the music from the 117 minutes runtime (which was almost constantly underscored) is not on this CD. I would recommend avoiding this purchase if you're looking for a musical experience to match that of the film.
The best solution at this current date is to hunt down the Esper Edition bootleg, released recently (either late 2004 or early 2005 depending on who you believe). This is not the first bootleg of the Blade Runner music - 20 such versions exist, thanks mostly to the untimely release of THIS soundtrack some 12 years post the release of the film itself. Vangelis himself has at points given support to such versions, even going so far as to release an extended 'private' soundtrack with around 200 copies (which of course was swiftly copied and distributed amongst the hardcore). However, the Esper Edition is somewhat definitive - it has excellent sound quality and takes almost all of the music used in the film.
Hopefully someday this will be released officially, but until then it would be a waste of money to purchase this rather limp stop-gap.
Finally, it's here and I'm not disappointed.
The original Blade Runner movie was amazing, nominee for the film of the century it was a science fiction tale of human emotion, with very moody sets and camera angles, not forgetting of course the amazing acting and cast responsible for it.
Vangelis has succeeded immensely in re-creating the feel of the film and expressing it as only Vangelis could. Using electronic synthesis the songs all sound original, as with all Vangelis songs they convey so much inspiration that they make everyone think about the moods he is trying to convey.
Previously un-released, when I saw this one I had to buy it. This of course is not everones cup of tea but you won't know unless you give it a try.
