Product Description

Sheila Chandra makes further forays into world musical styles on ZEN KISS, maintaining only a tenuous attachment to theIndian roots that brought her to prominence in the 1980s. The acapella opener, "La Sagesse", finds her delving into thegospel traditions of the American South, while she turns toBritish folk on "Love It Is a Killing Thing".
On "AbbessHildegard", Chandra pays homage to mediaeval feminist icon Hildegard von Bingen in a rite that has been explored more fully by the Iranian-born, Indian-raised vocalist Azam Ali onPORTALS OF GRACE and other works.

Music without boundaries4
A few years ago I was driving home from work listening to Radio 3, which at that time presented an eclectic mix of music. One piece suddenly stood out - a female voice singing beautifully, accompanied only by drones. I had to stop the car at the next lay-by to write down the name of the singer, Sheila Chandra, and the song, "Waiting". On the strength of that hearing I bought this album, and I was not disappointed.
Five of the tracks are singing to the background drones and the effect is has a wonderful timeless, ethereal quality. The sources are varied, including a medieval chant by Hildegard and the English traditional "A Sailor's Life". There are three unaccompanied songs and two tracks are what can best be described as vocal percussion - in "Speaking in Tongues III" and "Speaking in Tongues IV" Chandra uses her voice as an instrument to great effect (the first two in this series of pieces are on her Chandra's earlier album, "Weaving my Ancestors' Voices"). The odd track out "Woman and Child", a feminist statement with drone accompaniment, but this time with spoken words.
This is good listening and is recommended for those who like their music without boundaries.
