Editorial Reviews

CD Description
Terence Trent D'Arby emerged in the early '90s as a post-Prince R&B artist capable of blending rock, soul, pop, and funk, endearing himself to radio listeners with the smart, subtle "Wishing Well". On his third album, he expands on the genre-bending efforts of his first two albums. Things start outwith the fierce rocker "She Kissed Me", full of aggressive guitar riffs and pounding rhythms. Elsewhere, he turns to Princely pop ("Penelope Please"), and a larger-than-life blendof R&B and rock typified by percolating programmed rhythms, layers of processed guitar and emotive vocals. Though SYMPHONY OR DAMN is ultimately more rock than soul, D'Arby nevertheless displays a classic '70s-derived R&B Love Man sensibility in his lyrics, praising his lover because "she kisses methere" and declaring "my jeans are not big enough to hold me". Fortunately, his grand pop vision is bold enough to encompass such bravado, matching it step for step with carefullyconstructed sonic grandeur.

Customer Reviews

Highly recommended5
When I was young, I kinda liked TTD, but it's only now that I have the money to buy the stuff, that I actually realise how good he is. This CD starts VERY rocky, with "She Kissed Me" bordering on heavymetal. It calms down and settles down into a well-written and thoughtful piece. Highly recommended.

A great mixture of wild lyrics and rock tunes4
After being disappointed at the previous album, this was a huge breath of fresh air. A very summery album, which mixes slow very sexy ballads, with much faster rock tracks, which almost bring to mind some Lenny Kravitz material. I really enjoyed the ablum when it was released and still love to listen to it almost 5 years later. Highlights are the duet with Des'ree (Delicate) and the wonderful Frankie and Johnny. A must for all fans, but a great buy for almost anyone at all!

Masterful album!5
This is a fantastic album from a musical genius. TTD is so un-appreciated in the music industry, but to get in the charts and sell millions of albums is not always about talent. Of ocurse he had problems after the massive success of his first album. His arrogance and very experimental follow-up album has caused a backlash from the media and general public.

Anyway any critic or music buff having listened to Synthony or Damn would hae regarded it as one of the best albums that year. This is TTD's most musically adventurous album, his most poetic, and all round a great listen. For those who don't know, TTD writes his own songs, he has an amazing voice and fnatastic range, he is a great lyracist and original at that and he performs a lot of the instruments on each track, some tracks he does it all. In terms of musical talent he ranks with Prince and Stevie Wonder, and other superb all round talents, although he is less commercial.
Overall this is a must buy for fans of TTD or any fan of soul, rock, r&b and ballads.
