Suede's third album, and their first without main songwriter Bernard Butler, lacked none of their trademark glam rock and catchy melodies, but, crucially, it discarded the pomposity and indulgence that marred DOG MAN STAR. Instead, boostedby Richard Oakes' inventive guitarwork and the arrival of Neil Codling on keyboards, they presented a sparsely producedcollection of Bowie-tinged pop songs. Brett Anderson's favourite lyrical themes--bored youth, casual sex, seedy urban life ("peepshows and freakshows") and escape from it--enjoyedfree rein, but were predominantly framed within raunchy rockers rather than gloomy ballads. With the likes of "Trash", "Filmstar" and "She", Suede firmly established themselves asthe godfathers of indie glam and offered some classic pop into the bargain.

Fierce
This is the only Suede album I know, so I can't compare it to their others. It's one of the best UK albums I know from the 1990s, with a vocal performance that recalls early 1970s David Bowie. The songs seem to be mainly about a youthful underclass with a dose of sleaze. It isn't original subject matter, but it's done well in places. 'Beautiful Ones,' for instance, casually mentions a life lost to Bostik. The main strengths of the album are the white-hot, fuzzed-up guitar playing and the melodic hooks. No wonder there were so many hit singles. 'Trash' and 'Lazy' were what drew me to this album, but there are no weak spots. Of the slower numbers, 'By The Sea' tugs the hardest. Oddly, three of the slower songs are bunched at the end, which isn't the best way of ordering the tracks. A fine album nevertheless.
By no means trash.
I've had this cd since its first release in 1996 and i have to say its still a great piece of work, very uplifting. Every album seems in some way to be different, with Coming Up i thought this was the pinnacle of their efforts, everyone will have a favourite suede cd but i must say this is my favourite out of the lot and i own them all, and still 10 years on (from first release) i still listen to them, this cd keeps finding its way back on the stereo or pc.
This cd is well worth the money and time to listen to and is in my opinion a classic.
A+++
Brilliant!
Coming Up is a wonderful album. If you love great, guitar driven pop, buy it. Despite the 'critical consensus' that Suede were rubbish once Bernard Butler left, this album is very good and it is unsurprising that it was Suede's most successful (commercially speaking) album. It is worth buying just for the Beautiful Ones, let alone the delicate piano-driven By the Sea and the wonderful Trash.
