The Big One
An absolute classic from Toto, a master produced album especially for its time and the class A musicianship is outstanding, these guys are the finest having worked with the likes of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
After the guys completed work on Toto IV they later teamed up with Michael Jackson to work on Thriller.
Every single track on the album is solid, the tracks that were not released as singles are just as strong as the ones that were.
Given 6 Grammy awards, record of the year (Rosanna), album of the year and producer of the year it is not hard to see why this is one of the greatest rock albums ever.
great sacd sound!
the huge breakthrough album in the uk!
track by track
"rosanna" was single no.2 and reached no.12 in the uk charts! its a classic track that still receives airplay 9/10
"make beleive" is ok pretty much an album track 7/10
"i won't hold you back" is a huge classic! the single was the 3rd release and only reached no.37! its a sin it doesn't get the acclaim it deserves! it has been added to a dance track and hit the merry heights but the original is a true classic 10/10
"good for you" is 80's rock at its best 8/10
"afraid of love" is another classic that could have been a single! 9/10
"lovers in the night" is a rocking 80's style number..ok 7.10
"we made it" is all out 80's rock and not a highpoint 6/10
"we made it"another rocker that fills the album! 6/10
"waiting for love" is a great song that could have been a single its so good on the ears 8/10
"africa" the huge hit that still stirs me! why i bought the sacd version and im not disappointed!nthe single was a worldwide smash and isa still a classic! 10/10
how does it rate on sacd! perfect!
if like me you bought it for africa, i wont hold you back and rosanna...you can seep in luxury...and it's worth it for that alone!
Classy but effortless
John Peel once described Toto as 'rocking accountants from across the water,' the kind of sentiment they engendered in the music press. Many artists obviously didn't think so as members of the band played sessions on a bewildering number of albums by others. It's easy to see where the difference in opinion lies when you listen to this, probably their best album. The music is of a high quality, in terms of craft and execution. The lyrics aren't great, but they don't jar and they're not totally cliched.
There are three major hits here too. The big one, 'Africa,' finishes the album; 'Rosanna' is the rock song that betrays jazz influences, as do some of the other songs; 'I Won't Hold You Back' is the big ballad. Toto
rock out on the catchy 'Afraid Of Love' and 'Lovers In The Night,' and perfectly-cut harmony vocals appear all over the album.
There are no bad tracks on 'Toto IV.' The one problem I have is the one that probably makes them so reviled in certain quarters: it's all a bit too easy and, at times, almost formulaic. Even so, 'Toto IV' is an impressive album.
