While male rappers like the Notorious B.I.G. and Snoop Doggy Dogg are praised for kickin' that hard-core hip-hop and keepin' it real, female MCs who talk dirty or otherwise try torepresent from that same lifestyle are usually criticised for it. Double standard maybe? Well, if Too Short can talk about pimpin' and Kool G. Rap can get props for gangsta-fied lyrics, it's high time a rapper like Lil' Kim got hers.
Asthe only female member of Junior M.A.F.I.A., Lil' Kim namedherself the Lieutenant, and stole the show on that band's 1995 debut album, CONSPIRACY. Lyrically, there is no doubt she's talented, but it's her rhymin' delivery that clinches things on HARD CORE. Often reminiscent of the classic album READY TO DIE by her mentor the Notorious B.I.G., the production on every track is phat, and earns Lil' Kim her crown as the new queen of hard-core rap.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Another of the Notorious B.I.G's women--Lil' Kim comes into her own with Hard Core, perhaps the most explicitly pornographic album ever made by a woman. With the possible exception of soulmate Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim is the hardest woman in R&B. Sexual over and undertones abound with songs like 'Take it!', and the album features the usual handful of guest appearances, including the now-late Biggy Smalls and members of her former band Junior Mafia. Production chores are handled by the hottest kids on the block: Sean Combs--a.k.a Puff Daddy, Badboy second-in-command Stevie J. and SoSoDef supremo Jermaine Dupri. With the rudest introduction and interlude sections ever recorded, the album features the single "Crush On You" (not to be confused with the Jets/Aaron Carter) which is confusing since Li'l Kim's only contribution to this track seems to be intermittently moaning the word "true". Incidentally, the album's cover is stolen more regularly than any other from London's largest chain of second hand record shops, although what this says about the music is perhaps open to question. --Ronita Dutta

Outstanding..
I had this CD on cassette back in late '96 and recently added it to my CD collection too after it got chewed up and spat out!!
Kim led the way for female rappers, yes there were many who came before but she set the trend for females showing they can be as blunt and as carefree as the man them. This is a must have for any rap fan - this is where female rap STARTS.. Big Momma Thang/Spend a Little Doe/Crush on You - instant classics. My only beef with this is that she remixed Big Momma Thang out of respect for 2pac.
Otherwise your collection is missing out if this is missing.
Excellent
For anyone who does not like swearing.Don't buy this album.Because this album is proper hardcore music. But for anyone who is a lil kim fan buy this album because all the tracks a pure hiphop music.People who are getting her second album.Don't bother get it because it is rubbish compared to the first album. The best tracks on this album are big momma thang and no time and dreams and many more.Lil kim is the best female rap artist I have ever heard.Because she expresses how she feels. And she says in her lyrics what she has been through in life. And some artist cannot express their feelings like how lil kim can.
