Editorial Reviews
From Amazon.com
Credited with being the first artists to fuse folk and psychedelic sensibilities, the Incredible String Band benefited from having two very complementary frontmen. Robin Williamson and Mike Heron were also extremely versatile musicians, as this, their third album, indicates: he two of them play 17 instruments here, including harpsichord, water harp, sitar, and oud. While Hangman's is a fascinating record dense with exotic rhythms and instrumentation, it also suffers in spots from the airy excesses of its creators. --Steven Stolder

Just beautiful with a lot of humour
In is only of recent times that I got to know about this band and what a surprise. They were contemporaries of the beatles and yet they are so little known. Their songs are full of great lyrics with many twist in the accompanying musical score. The Scottish influence shows through and they can be described as early pioneers in world music with daring to be different. Take the time to listen to the lyrics one time, they are really interesting!
The incredible Incredible String Band
This is the truly incredible Incredible String Band's landmark album released in the year following Summer of Love in the wake of their previous two wonderful albums.
The enchanting sounds that one hears are much more than the sum of the parts - the parts being elements of folk, blues, bluegrass and jazz - they are totally redolent of the prevailing atmosphere of 1968. This is the moment in time when dreams had not yet fully comprehended the corruption already taking place on the cusp of a nightmare. Relish every second of these rare moments in sound when flowers filled the hair of the peace and love generation who almost evaporated as quickly as they appeared. The Manson killings were about to happen and John Lennon would not long afterwards declare the dream over.
You will hear nothing like The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter in the music of today; nothing to even begin to compare with its unique, pure sound. Even the music the Incredible String Band influenced has sadly finally fallen silent.
This album, albeit forty years old, epitomises a time when young folk brimmed with relentless optimism and aspired to attain spiritual and non-materialistic goals. We could do with some of that influence now.
Listen to the timeless notes of this music - idiosyncratic at times - but essentially atmospheric, beguiling and beautiful.
no songs about beating up women and homosexuals
Unspeakably lovely, timeless and out of time. Hopelessly unfashionable now. Good! When you think of what's fashionable now...Ever been tempted to read a poem, see a play, felt curious, had a moment of whimsy, liked a haunting folk air, read a fantasy novel - it's all here . There's more talent and originality in every bar of this than almost the whole output of the music industry since punk was inflicted on us. Maybe that's not fair, but then punks - or, at least, writers about punk - are not often fair to the ISB. There were a lot of catchy punk singles, with a wistful silliness that is no stranger to the ISB's world; punk fans could find more in common here than they suspect - not music for when you're drunk, though. The other reviewers have said it all, but I wanted to get my 5 stars worth in.
