Kein Wilkommen Hier
This CD wasn't so much released as it escaped. It has to be the worst recording of the songs from both the show and the film that I have ever heard.
Judi Dench does her usual professional job on her songs, believable, quirky and full of character. However, Jonathan Pryce seems to have no idea of what the MC is about at all. His German accent has been acquired from the "Accents R Us" bargain basket, and he presents none of the menace and joy that are present in the MC's songs. Maria Friedmann is simply winsome in Sally's character songs, though she does work to put across the Englishness of Isherwood's Sally in the Kit Kat Klub songs.
The orchestra is simply too big and cannot give the feel of a theatre show, plus the accoustic in which the recording was made is far too cavernous completely killing the feeling of intimacy or claustrophobia that this show needs.
A real Stinker!
At last a complete"ensemble" Cabaret
Whilst no recording will ever erase Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles,it has to be admitted that her sheer talent and personality did rather overwhelm the film version.
This "ensemble" recording rectifies that.
Maria Friedmann & Greg Edelmann in the lead bring a humanity and reality to their roles, something slightly lacking in the film. The MC is the marvellous Johnathan Pryce, who manages to convey jollity with an underlying sinister air.Add to this Fraulein Schneider sung by Judi Dench, who herself played Sally Bowles on the London stage in 1968.
This 2 CD set also includes music from the 1987 Broadway revival, and several tracks written for the film version, but not in the original stage show.
If you want a balanced, musical and enlivening version,go for this one!
A modern masterpiece
While I have to admit that i prefer older musicals where the people burst out into song for no reason, this soundtrack was the one that launched me into the more modern musical.
All of the songs possess a quality that doesn't make them sound childish, the best of these being 'Maybe This Time' and the title track.
A thoroughly modern musical with a suitable hint of sadness.
