Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
George Michael's second post-Wham! outing, Listen Without Prejudice could not have been more appropriately titled. Following on the booty-shakin' heels of Faith, Listen found Michael being more serious than sassy. "Freedom 90" had a strong groove, a catchy melody, and of course, the sex-bomb video. The contemplative tone of the album is best illustrated by the other hit that it spawned, "Praying for Time." Michael's voice was as strong as ever, and he did indeed take several risks on the CD. "They Won't Go When I Go," (not a Michael composition) was almost cryptic, and "Cowboys and Angels" was a lament of a different kind. --Steve Gdula

CD Description
From its odd, defensive title to the announcement that noneof the album's videos would include the photogenic singer/songwriter, George Michael's second solo album consciously repositioned the ex-Wham! frontman as a mature artist rather than a teenybopper idol. Indeed, the video for "Freedom '90",which shares only its title with Wham's 1984 hit, features the ritual burning of Michael's trademark leather jacket.
Career intent aside, LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE is an excellent adult-pop album opening with the tender "Praying For Time" and continuing through nine more excellent, well-sung, andmelodic examples of smooth commercial pop, the highlight being the angry "They Won't Go When I Go". Although a more dance-oriented LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE, VOLUME TWO was due forrelease shortly after the first volume, it was never issued. This projected follow-up may be yet another casualty of the protracted legal battle between George Michael and Sony Music that derailed the singer's career for over half a decade.

Customer Reviews

One of the top 5 cd's of the 90's5
Without question, in this area of the world, this is the record that had people scratching their heads when it came out. No longer he of the "biker-femme" persona, GM came out (you know what I mean) with an incredible sophomore effort. Serious, vulnerable, so much different than Wham! or "Faith." Most people I know have never even listened to the record (which says a lot about how difficult it is to hear any GM in the States), others doubted it could be anything more than Faith II. Those who gave it a listen were hooked. Even those who despised George from Faith. Even those who don't necessarily like his style. They all had to admit that this is a record that reaches near epic, operatic proportions. "Cowboys and Angels" is the most interesting track, but it is the more radio friendly "Waiting for that Day" that is widely held to be the "song" of the album. Just an opinion, but maybe George was going through some sort of spiritual struggle while writing these songs (and as I understand had just been dumped by Kathy Jeung). Who knows? These last few years have proven that whatever kind of struggle it was, he lost (see LA cop fiasco). This is the George Michael that I want to remember when he retires to the South of France and stops making music.

listening with prejudice in favour of this album!5
This album is a masterpiece! From the energetic upbeat Freedom! '90 to the musically enchanting They Won't Go When I Go, or the musical wizardry of praying for time there isn't a bad track to be found. George Michael really has come of age with this album. The Lyrics are as fine as you'll find, with the words of praying for time in a league of their own. Whether you want to join in with George in the singing of something to save, or if you want to be drawn almost hypnotically away by mothers pride there is something for everyone. Buy this album.
