Essential
Aretha Franklin's recording career with Atlantic Records spanned from 1967 until 1979. In that time, she recorded many tracks which are now set in stone as classic soul standards such as 'Respect', 'Do Right Woman, Do Right Man', '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman', 'Chain Of Fools', 'Think', 'Angel' and 'I Say A Little Prayer'. Needless to say, all of those songs are on this collection in their original form and they are accompanied by the cream of her Atlantic days.
When you listen to this album, it is clear that Aretha hasn't been unjustifiably immortalised as "The Queen Of Soul" - this compilation is absolutely brilliant from beginning to end. Even the recordings I hadn't heard before buying this album and had approached with caution such as her sensational cover of Elton John's 'Border Song' (which may even top the original) all delighted. This is an essential collection with absolutely no filler from an artist performing at her very best. Forget the majority of the artists in today's charts who masquerade as soul - this is the real soul music. Sweet soul music.
Respect.
All I need to get by....
This Best Of concentrates on Aretha's classic Atlantic period from the late 60's to the early 70's and by doing so renders itself absolutely essential. It collects the hits and the standout album tracks and is the perfect showcase of Aretha at her peak. Other compilations offer more tracks but because her output since the early 70's has been variable to say the least, they end up being filled out with sub standard songs and performances. Without buying all her Atlantic albums from this period, this best of is all you will ever need. Sublime.
