Editorial Reviews

CD Description
The compilers of Mango Records' Reggae Greats series must have faced quite the dilemma when looking over the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry's available material. Should they focus on his amazing production skills or on his exemplary performances? Would it make more sense to showcase his pioneering dubs or his more conventional song-oriented records? The logical conclusion was "all of the above", and REGGAE GREATS' only flaw is its skimpy ten-track length.
Highlights include one of the finest reggae songs ever, Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" (later covered by the Clash), Jah Lion's "Wisdom", and two tracks from Perry's classic 1976 album ROAST FISH, COLLIE WEED AND CORN BREAD, "Soul Fire" and "Roast Fish and Cornbread". Although the original vinyl LPs in Mango'sReggae Greats series were poorly mastered and suffered froma distinct lack of bottom end-a fate worse than death for such bass-driven music-this flaw has been fixed in the seriesof excellent-sounding CD reissues.

Customer Reviews

Reggae is always reggae4
I didn't have any information about Lee Scratch Perry before a friend told me he had heard it for the first time and he enjoyed it. So I decided to look for it and order one CD. And although the kind of reggae has a "classical" reggae basis it has some most interesting new sounds, at least for me. I was very happy with a new sound at home.
