The best album from Michael Rother
This, along with Flammende Herzen, are the only two albums I recommend from Michael Rother, although Katzenmusik is also worth a listen.
It's absolutely beautiful, all instrumental music, with a focus on electric guitars. Very melodic, soft, happy and optimistic kind of sound, not the noise you'd associate with some electric instrumentals, or the pessimistic trash you hear today.
These tunes were quite well known in the latter part of the 70's, and are now digitally remastered. If you have the LP, it's worthwhile to get the CD, for the cleaner and crisper sound, which will come out very clearly in the kind of guitar sound Rother produces. Hold on to the LP, if only for the nostalgic value and the warmer sound.
I'd give this 6 stars out of 5!!!! It's my favorite album of all time!
Classic Michael Rother music did not end with NEU!......
There is a school of thought that often says NEU! created 3 classic lp's and then disappeared. Wrong. I would urge anyone who likes NEU! to invest in this fantastic, under-appreciated lp. Recorded in 1977, it is Rother's second solo effort (helped by master Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit and Kosmische lord Conny Plank producing) and contains some of the most 'motorik' (and utterly euphoric) instrumental tracks you will ever hear. Try listening to Stromlinien, Orchestrion, and best of all, Sterntaler for evidence. Rother's guitar melodies are crystal clear and crisp as a winter morning, and tracks build from low-fi electronic beginnings to epic, panoramic endings. Klaus Dinger was a huge talent, but this lp proves that Rother was easily his equal as a solo artist and did not depend on his more 'punk' friend. Any fan of Bowie's Berlin period would also be well advised to purchase this utter classic - because the music of the NEU! 'family' (NEU!,Harmonia,La Dusseldorf and Michael Rother) was a massive inspiration to him. Hear this album now and realise why.
Liftmuziek
As a long-term fan of the original NEU! album I really wanted to like this. But everything I've heard from Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger since NEU! 75 has been a pale imitation of that classic 1972 release. This is music rather in the style of Vangelis or Jean Michel Jarre, but totally lacking any kind of edge. Disappointingly bland.
