Amazon.co.uk Review
Sexy D'Angelo kisses goodbye to the mainstream with his eagerly awaited follow-up to his raw, rootsy R&B debut, Brown Sugar. Voodoo's mission is to electrify and revolutionise B-boy R&B through a synthesis of urban blues and funk--hand-clap snares, seething seven string jazzy guitar and beats so dirty that your mother wouldn't have them in the house. He's helped no end by an immensely stark production courtesy of Amir "?Questlove" Thompson from The Roots (Do You Want More ) and DJ Premier (Gang Starr) which lets the music breathe. However, his multi-tracked, gorgeous voice is the star attraction here, evoking vintage Prince, Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, with the lyrics being top-notch lessons in lust. The 13 cuts' range from the juke-joint "Playa Playa" with it's heave-ho horn arrangement courtesy of trumpeter, Roy Hargrove, Roberta Flack soul classic, "Feel like Makin' Love" guest starring the Queen of hip-hop soul, Lauryn Hill to "Send it On" which owes major props to the Purple One. "Devil's Pie" is a monster jazz-soul tune full of licks and tricks that should guarantee a little dance floor dementia and for confused novices, there's hip-hop slammer, "Left and Right" featuring Method Man and Redman. Moody and cool, this is perfect for locking the world away on a long, hot night. This is definitely one for the ladies and those boys with good taste.--Kate Nafolo--

CD Description
When D'Angelo popped on the scene in '97 with his critical and commercial breakthrough BROWN SUGAR, he brought a gush of refreshing air to the musty world of soulful, sensual R&B.When VOODOO was released, little in the R&B world had changed, as the same stale, colour-by-numbers vocals sung over the simplest of beats--ripped off from Teddy Riley or Timbaland--dominated the genre. But once again, the singer/songwriter (for that's what he is) dropped a dose of energy into the soul planet with his invigorating, jazzy, funky, constantly metamorphosing sophomore effort.
While much of VOODOO is not entirely original, D'Angelo does wear his influences on his sleeve, particularly those of Prince and Marvin Gaye. D'Angelo does so many things well that by the time he is finished, it's hard to question whether his sound is his own or an exacting mesh of all that's come before. Truly it doesn't matter, for VOODOO is so endearingly crafty and knee-weakeningly seductive, it's practically impossible to close your heart to it. From the free-jazzy, trippy old-school-dragged-through-the-blues muck of "Devil's Pie" to the straightforwardtorch singing of "Untitled", VOODOO mesmerises and hypnotises with soul both familiar and brand new. A tasty treat.

Customer Reviews

Sexy, soulful, stylish, superb.5
Having achieved massive success a few years ago with 'Brown Sugar', D'Angelo refused to take the easy route with his follow-up, eschewing trad, chart-friendly R'n'B structures and tricks in favour of an innovative and complex musical bouillabaisse. Mixing R'n'B, soul, hip hop, traditional African music, funk and jazz into an effortlessly smooth, luxuriant and soulful sound, D'Angelo sees himself as being in the lineage of Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Prince, Marvin Gaye and Jimi Hendrix, dismissing most of his contemporaries in his (awesome) sleeve-notes as being "more interested in an artist's business tactics than in their artistry." You could never accuse D'Angelo of this. Gorgeous, intricate multi-tracked vocal collages intertwine with funky, rich bass, click-sharp percussion, lushly minimal keys and guitars and occasional teases of brass. And as for the songs... 'Spanish Joint' is straight-down-the-line funky, 'Feel Like Makin' Love' is irresistibly sexy and seductive, while 'Untitled (How Does It Feel)' is one of the most gorgeous and wonderful tunes of the year, by any artist in any genre. Forget all the poseurs and impostors, D'Angelo is the man, and 'Voodoo' is the album. Sumptuously magnificent.

The one true soul survivor!5
5 years, 5 long years I have waited for this album to come out. I've had it for 2 years now but I will never tire of the straight up raw power and dirty funk this album has got. This man is up there with the greats such as Stevie, Marvin and Al. 'Send it on' has got to be the best track on the album, the trumpets and that voice just get me every time. Every song has an irresistible beat that sounds like no other. D'Angelo is a genius pure and simple. I still listen to 'Brown Sugar' and that is over 7 years old! I can't wait for his next offering. BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT!

Finally a follow up which surpasses it's predecessor!!!5
Is this better than the outstanding Brown Sugar? In my opinion yes, it is much better...controversial I know, but as i bought "Voodoo" first i guess it set the standard.

Fans of soul have not got a full cd collection without D'angelo's second album "voodoo". Although i have a small cd collection this is the one that i can play and sing along to all day long. Although it is not very diverse in it's style. The style that the cd has is right.

D'angelo's voice is especially amazing in "send it on" and "africa", while is production work throughout the album is equally brilliant if not better.

I would love for a fan of music to improve their collection with this amazing cd, and experience the same joy of listening as i did. BUY IT!!
