Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
Jugula was the fifth project that Jimmy Page and I had worked on, but the first record that we made together in its entirety. It was a very enjoyable experience. I went down to Jimmy's place a few times with an eight track Teac borrowed from Pete Townsend, and we worked on it there for a while.

Then he came up to Lytham, where I had helped to set up a studio with my old school friend Tony Beck, who sadly had a tragic accident and is no longer with us. Tony Franklin, later of The Firm, Nik Green, later of Whitesnake and Preston Heyman, later of Terence Trent D'Arby and Steve Broughton were the nucleus of the backing band. Nik Green also engineered the record.

Jimmy and I kicking up the dust at the Rainbow Theatre. We had a wonderful time. One possible reason would have been that I had just fallen in love for the fourth time in my life, and that it would be forever. Etc.

I think that the whole record is great with the exception of 'Advertisement', which is maybe on the wrong record. My taste varies from year to year as to which is my favorite track.

Customer Reviews

You've probably gotta love him to like it...3
If you love Harper then you need this fix! If you don't then steer clear, try something like Stormcock or Valentine instead.

Varies from the sublime to the indifferent4
Roy Harper has produced some of his best material for this album. Hangman is undoubtedly one of his best tracks ever with the fantastic guitar of Jimmy Page! However it is not all sweet. 'Bad speech' is self describing and 'Elizabeth' and 'Frozen moment' seem to merge together as forgettable nothingness. The remaining tracks blow you away though because they are so good. Whithout a doubt, if you like Roy Harper's music, you will love this!

The Sensual World5
The stand out tracks on this album are 1984, Frozen Moment and Twentieth Century Man. Hope is also beautiful. One thing that is often missed when we talk about Roy Harper is how many of his songs are openly erotic. This is the one thing that sets him apart from so many of his contemporaries. Seeing him live around this period was a deeply sensual experience. Get involved.
