Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
When the Stone Roses disbanded shortly after Second Coming, few people expected to hear any more from Ian Brown. After all, it was guitarist John Squire who had the talent, and Ian was a poor singer at best. It was rather unexpected, then, when the King Monkey's lo-fi debut, Unfinished Monkey Business, made a minor splash upon its release; at the very least, it was much better than Squire's dreadfully dreary Seahorses. Golden Greats effectively picks up where Unfinished left off, albeit with more emphasis on production this time around. Guitars, keyboards and samples abound in this trippy, groovy and occasionally rock & roll throwback to the heyday of acid house, the very scene that originally spawned the Stone Roses. It's also a more optimistic album than his debut, with the exception of the rather petty "Babasonicos", but tucked as it is at the end of the album, it's fairly easy to overlook. --Robert Burrow

PLATINUM PLEASURE
Never mind golden, this album is platinum. The best album i have ever heard by a long shot. As a hardened roses fan i never imagined that brown could match and indeed better anything the roses created. This album brings together the originality of the roses and excels to another level with its unbelievel combination of psychodelic rock and dance. The combination of this and browns voice is somehow beautiful. If Brown never creates another record he can be completely satisfied with what he has achieved. But please make more!
The magic is there!
A welcome departure from Unfinished Monkey Business's earthy studio recorded feel. Golden greats has a full 24 track production. There's a lot to listen 'in there' with some high points reached that remind you of the better 'roses' days - The track dolphins were monkeys is a perfect example, it starts off with a moody feel then kicks in with an up-tempo good time groove, with the lyrics sounding like the Ian Brown of 'One Love' era... he should definately do more tracks like this! Any Roses fans and Brown fans must buy this album! - it's the best thing an ex roses member has put out since the debut roses album
Quirky,catchy,space age,freaky rock music
The man is back and sounding better than ever, each track is completely different from each other with a multitude of different styles blending together on one album, who would have thought at this stage in his career Ian Brown would still be making progressive new music. The standout tracks on the album are:Getting High, Love Like a Fountain, Set My Baby Free and Dolphins were Monkeys(or as Ian says "Dolphins were Moonkees") Get out and Buy this now.
