Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
When the Stone Roses disbanded shortly after Second Coming, few people expected to hear any more from Ian Brown. After all, it was guitarist John Squire who had the talent, and Ian was a poor singer at best. It was rather unexpected, then, when the King Monkey's lo-fi debut, Unfinished Monkey Business, made a minor splash upon its release; at the very least, it was much better than Squire's dreadfully dreary Seahorses. Golden Greats effectively picks up where Unfinished left off, albeit with more emphasis on production this time around. Guitars, keyboards and samples abound in this trippy, groovy and occasionally rock & roll throwback to the heyday of acid house, the very scene that originally spawned the Stone Roses. It's also a more optimistic album than his debut, with the exception of the rather petty "Babasonicos", but tucked as it is at the end of the album, it's fairly easy to overlook. --Robert Burrow

Astonishing5
I cannot put into words the love I have for this album. It is just so perfectly produced. The lyrical content is relatively simple, but well thought out, The music is enduring and so beautifully layered. I can listen to it over and over again and it never grows tiresome. Ian never follows the crowd - he sets his own agenda and does what he wants and this makes for some truly astonishing pop music. If only one british band/group/solo artist brought out an album that was as good as this every year I would be happy, but unfortunatly we have to put up with the endless stream of drivel that passes for 'classic' British albums.

Nearly all other British artists are lazy and boring apart from Ian Brown and Thom Yorke.

what can one say?...4
an excellent record! his influences are heard throughout - the jacksons, stevie wonder, funk and soul... also, the incorporation of eastern muscical movements into this style is purely genius. still in disbelief of ian brown's abilities for writing and production after 'unfinished monkey business', i expected no less than the gem that this album really is. a great feel to it. d.mccracken and i.goldfinger can't go unmentioned. this is a cracker of a recording and is real important in my collection. i highly advise it.

Quirky,catchy,space age,freaky rock music4
The man is back and sounding better than ever, each track is completely different from each other with a multitude of different styles blending together on one album, who would have thought at this stage in his career Ian Brown would still be making progressive new music. The standout tracks on the album are:Getting High, Love Like a Fountain, Set My Baby Free and Dolphins were Monkeys(or as Ian says "Dolphins were Moonkees") Get out and Buy this now.
