Amazon.co.uk Review
Laurent Garnier--the original funky Frenchman, house-and techno- impressario, label boss (Mr Oizo of Flat Eric fame was his discovery) and DJ who first dared the world to believe that French dance music could be cool--returns with his first album since 1998's distinctly patchy 30. Unreasonable Behaviour is much better. "Sounds From The Big Babou", the initial single from this long player, is a great lolloping hunk of funky analogue filth, with a cool tune to boot: just what the world and its dancing dog likes. "The Man with The Red Face" takes the usual techno-no-go area of saxophone solos and honks and squawks it through some seriously energised tech-house grooves; "Dangerous Drive"'s minimalist techno does exactly what it says: packs a heaving dance floor into a Ferrari and takes it on a top-speed rampage down some twisty mountain tracks in Colombia, USA. In between, there are moments of electro reflection, gently mellowing tech-house and ace farty synth sounds pootling around being friendly, chilled and tuneful. Not that unreasonable at all. --Robert Heller
Customer Reviews
One of the truly great albums.
It is satisfying to see that every other customer review is glowing in it's praise. Because albums like 'Unreasonable Behaviour' really just don't come around all that often.
This isn't your standard run-of-the-mill techno album with routine four-to-the-floor rythms and Detroitesque synths and bleeps. Garnier occasionally references these niches in this work, but the sound he has constructed here is far more wretched and dark, building on the masterpiece that was 'Le Voyage De Simone', the highlight of his previous album, the misfiring '13'.
There is nothing misfiring about 'Unreasonable Behaviour', however. His unique level of production on each and every track is thorough and detailed, with rippling layers of sonic filth, galvanised by mesmerising off-beat snares and kicks, tearing through the airwaves.
From the ultra-cool, jazz induced vibe of 'The Man With The Red Face', to the searing, pulsating doom of 'Dangerous Drive', and the twisted, smouldering beast that is 'The Sound Of The Big Babou' - the album's pinnacle - every single track feels like it has a purpose, an aesthetic. There is no impression of a lack of concept, or time. Everything belongs.
Whether you like techno or house, indie or abstract, whether you have even heard of Laurent Garnier or not, I implore you to consider buying this album. It transcends music, and it's sheer quality should entrance listeners who have never even heard anything like this before. One thing's for sure, you won't hear anything quite like it again.
F coms boss delivers a gem
Laurent Gariner along with Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain, Shazz & The Youngstars are responsable for the Techno, Jazz & Deep House side of the french dance scene.
Mr Gariner has been producing and djing for a very very long time now. As his past albums have shown us you still don't know what to expect. This has to be my Fav artist album he has done as there is something for everyone a bit of Techno, Jazz-Tech and that unique Gariner Electro sound.
if you've bought any stuff on the F Communications for which Laurent is the boss or stuff by Ludovic Navarre (St Germain), Shazz, The youngstars then you will love this.
Most people think that Techno is boring and just goes boom boom boom! well guess again and buy this and let Mr Gariner open your mind!
Unreasonable Behaviour Laurent Garnier.
Laurent Garnier is hardly a stranger for electronic music lovers. He's respected as a DJ and as a producer. He's also the boss of the label F-Communication.
Unreasonable Behaviour is his most recent and best album. The first track isn't really a song. It's like the title says a warning. City Sphere is jazzy house that tries to create the sphere of an industrial city in the future. Forgotten Thoughts is a very good electronic song, with a good drum pattern.
The next song of the album is, for me, the best. The Sound of the Babou is true classic. Not easy to listen to, but very intense. Another 'coup de theatre' is the jazzy The Man With The Red Face. With a great melody and sax. Greed is a very complex song, but a nice one. Dangerous Drive is together with The Man With the Red Face a song based for the dance floor.
Overall a very good album. Not easy to listen to, but very intense.
