Amazon.co.uk Review
Girl, Interrupted, the movie adaptation of Susanna Kaysen's memoir of being forced into a psychiatric institute, faces the challenge that all films set in the 1960s must overcome: How do you create a memorable soundtrack that isn't filled with the same "greatest hits" that we hear on the radio (or any number of mediocre compilations)? Thankfully, Girl does have some eclectic moments: The Mama's & the Papa's "Got a Feelin'" isn't a tune we hear everyday, the reflective Jefferson Airplane song "Comin' Back to Me" fits the movie nicely, and Wilco's "How to Fight Loneliness"--though written 30 years after the film's events take place--is a welcome modern touch. Of course, we get overplayed classic rock, too--Merrilee Rush & the Turnabouts' "Angel of the Morning", the Band's "The Weight", and Them's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". But for soundtrack buffs, the real treasures are at the end. Mychael Danna--best known for his ongoing collaboration with director Atom Egoyan--delivers 18 of his most-accessible-to-date (though still rather dark and ambient) score tracks. --Jason Verlinde

Beautiful
This soundtrack is a definite must-have for any fans of the movie Girl, Interrupted - it sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. After purchasing this, I can now watch the movie and appreciate its breathtaking soundtrack a lot more than I could before - the music really adds to the beauty of the film and although you may not realize it at first, after buying this CD and listening to it I guarantee you will.
Like many others, it's not the 10 '60s tracks at the beginning that stand out for me - although they are most definitely worth listening to. Out of these tracks, I recommend the opening track, Wilco - How To Fight Lonliness (it's actually a song from the '90s, but it fits into the movie perfectly and is now a song I adore), The Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today (brilliant introduction - you'll recognize this song from the part of the movie where Susanna & Lisa have escaped from the mental institution and are at the party), and Petula Clark - Downtown (you'll definitely recognize this one - you could call it the 'theme tune' of the movie).
But as I said before, it's not those songs that make the Girl, Interrupted soundtrack so wonderful - it's tracks 11-29 - the original motion picture score by Mychael Danna. Each one of these tracks is beautifully composed and incredibly moving, even if you haven't seen the film. Tracks like 14 are dark and haunting, whereas tracks like 12 & 18 are uplifting. Track 18 in particular - 'The Tunnels' - brought a tear to my eye.
Overall, if you've seen Girl, Interrupted, this is definitely worth buying, as I guarantee you will love it. And if you haven't seen it...buy it anyway.
A captivating soundtrack
I discovered this film a couple of years back, and loved it instantly, but after a few viewings I realized that it wasn't the film itself, but the beautiful soundtrack (although, undeniably, the film is wonderful) that drew me in. So I soon came onto old Amazon to find it, and when it came, listened intently as it played through all 29 tracks.
The ten 60s pop songs are all similar in their subtle melancholy, and are fantastic pieces by renowned artists, but I found they overshadowed the stunning score by Mychael Danna, who I had never heard of until then. He is so experimental with Girl, Interrupted: his use of the Toronto glass orchestra is certainly surprising, but an absolute pleasure to listen to. He mixes strings, woodwind and piano with an acoustic guitar to invent the most unusual sounds. The clashing tones and staccato notes are used (alongside the glass orchestra) perfectly to create the most amazing of timbres. He carries the music over the tracks to make one movement that builds up to a sublime climax in track 18 (The Tunnels). After that, we are released from the grip the music holds us in, but still free to listen to one of the best soundtracks ever.
Apreciation of Beauty
A beutifully directed and perspected film, the soundtrack represents it again to those who have seen the film. The compassion with the characters that yuo share with the films, has now the ambient mood appreciated by this beautiful cd.
The eyes and character of Lisa are more than i can describe..
