Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
The hard-rocking Cult have come along way from the early Native American stylings of Dreamtime and the dodgy goth tendencies evident on their classic album Love. Blame Rick Rubin, who helmed Electric and steered them down the rocky road to metal heaven. This Best Of Collection brings together tracks from their entire career and is a worthy testament to their rites of passage. There are so many great tracks on here that it's hard to pick out individual tracks to heap praise on; however, perennial favourite "She Sells Sanctuary" is always worth a listen and still sounds as refreshing as it did in 1985. There are some dubious inclusions from the twilight years of their career, such as the sub-standard "Star" and "Coming Down (Drug Tongue)" but when they have to hold their own alongside tracks like "Fire Woman" and "Lil' Devil" it's hardly surprising that they are found wanting. Pure Cult is a fitting testament to one of Britain's finest rock bands. --Helen Marquis

CD Description
The Cult, unlike its predecessor bands the Southern Death Cult and the Death Cult, was unapologetic about its mainstream rock & roll aspirations, which makes PURE CULT: THE SINGLES 1984-1995 the best possible starting place for the group, and for many, the logical end point as well. The Cult was a singles band, and a pretty great one, too, as evidenced by the Stones-like "Love Removal Machine" and the blazing "Fire Woman". The ensemble's mixture of '60s influences (no wonderIan Astbury became the lead singer of the reformed Doors) and hard-rock power (no wonder drummer Matt Sorum went on to join Guns N' Roses) not only helped define a whole subset ofthe late-'80s alternative-rock scene, it's fair to say thatthe groups like Stone Temple Pilots owed at least some of their success to the Cult's early flirtations with the rock mainstream. Although the set isn't chronologically ordered, PURE CULT still gives a good sense of the band's surprisinglyorganic shift in sound, ranging from the gothy neo-psychedelia of "She Sells Sanctuary" to the sneering rock of "Star".

Customer Reviews

Each and everyone is a winner, 19 exquisite songs5
I hadn't really paid attention to the group before, but this " Best of ... " is simply amazing. I bought it for my boyfriend and fell completely in love with Ian Astbury. My personal favourites are (nº 11) Edie, Ciao Baby and (nº 2) Fire Woman. The Cult have managed to create a sort of music which isn't simply Rock or Gothic, there is so much emotion in their lyrics and their music, it is a perfect mixture of agression, love and sweet melancholy. An absolute hit and I can only recommend it to everybody.

Not a duff song in sight5
Well, what can you say. An amazing collection from one of the best rock bands of the last 20th century. As the songs progress you can hear the musicianship improve. That's not to say that songs like SpiritWalker aren't classics, but by the time we hit Love Removal Machine the band are on a full speed rock trip. Heart Of Soul is a bit bland radio rock, but the rest are pure quality.
As for The Witch, can a song groove more than that.
The only reason not to buy this cd is that you should go out and buy the entire back catalogue so you have everything anyway !

Best of the best5
A brilliant conconction of music, love it, love it, love it! Takes me right back to St.Ives in Cornwall sitting on the harbour wall with all the other hippies, thinking I was so cool and listening to She Sells Sanctuary blasting out from the pub opposite - oh to have that time all over again.....
