Amazon.co.uk Review
A near arcade-perfect conversion of one of the best fighting games of all time, Tekken 3 is an essential PlayStation title that belongs in every gamer's library. While the one-on-one combat here is essentially two-dimensional, highly detailed 3-D character graphics and a roaming camera viewpoint give this game a distinctive 3-D look. Gameplay is fast and furious, with simple controls that are easy to learn. This game also allows for special moves and combos to be executed with relative ease. Various modes of play are available, including "Tekken Force", a one-player side-scrolling brawler.
Chock full of goodies--most of which remain hidden until certain requirements are met--Tekken 3 rewards players' persistent endeavours with secret characters, alternate costumes, and yet another mode of play, Tekken ball, a bizarre variation on volleyball. Also, beating the game's arcade mode allows players to view a beautifully animated epilogue that is specific to the individual fighter used. And once you've seen one, you just have to see them all. --Joe Hon

The best fighter ever?
Despite what Namco developers say, there really hasn't been much improvement made in the Tekken system since Tekken 3. While newer installments have better graphics and more characters, the third perfected the form that two helped define. Notice how I fail to mention the stepping stone of the original? That's because its awful to look at, awful to play, awful to think about and awful to bring up in the bedroom or at a funeral. None of the newest characters are as interesting, popular or fun to play as Hwoarang, Xiaoyu or Jin Kazama were back in the day. Both options for the music are excellent, the endings are great, the game is funny as hell and the story is the best in years. Tekken 3 really excels in contemporising the series. While 1 and 2 were quite rooted in mythology while being set in the modern day, this game really takes things into the now (well, the now of a decade ago!) in terms of backgrounds and the rock/techno soundtrack, much more consistently effective than the OTT Euro-dance of previous installments. The inclusion of Tekken Force helps Tekken 3 stand out from the crowd as well. The inclusion of a scroller WITHIN an arcade fighter is another reason why this game was so fresh. Later installments of Force were never as good (or as grippingly obsessive) and where did we end up? Death By Degrees. And don't get me started on how brilliant Tekken Ball is.
I find Tekken Tag Tournament to be a good successor to this game, even if its essentially the Mortal Kombat Trilogy of Tekken; better graphics, complete roster, nothing new in terms of gameplay. Tekken 3 is for my money, the best straightforward beat em up ever made, and although I'm not fond of saying such things, it's impact can still be felt today. While it may not have the depth of its sister franchise (Soul Blade and Calibur), its as perfect as a non-weapon fighter can get.
A Big Step Up From The First Two!
This game was in fact the very first game which i ever got for my Playstation, and i loved it. It's a wonderful game which you will find very addictive. It is also a massive step up from the first two in the series especially in terms of graphics.
Like the other two in the series, the general game idea is the same. You get a list of cool martial arts masters who have entered or rentered 'the king of iron fist tornament' for different reasons. You pick one of them and basically fight them to the top using literally thosands of moves including out-of-this-world-specials, which i still cannot master.
As i have already mentioned, the graphics in this game are far superior to anything seen on PS1 before and are a big step up from the previous in the Tekken series.
One of the best things about this game that there are several new modes which you can play on. First there is 'Tekken Force Mode' which is basically where you pick a character and you must fight your way through several levels which basically consist of loads of big people who for some strange reason are all named after birds, attacking you. Then second there is 'Tekken Ball Mode' which is really cool and i just a case of hitting a huge ball over a net to the other player with any of your moves. If the other person fails to hit it back over to you, then the ball explodes and the they lose life. The winner is the one left standing.
What more can i say? If you have a PS1 and you are into martial arts/arcade games then this is a great choice and i guarentee that you will not be dissapointed in the least.
The best fighting game in the world, ever!
Tekken 3 is absolutely fantastic! You start with 10 characters, and can unlock 10 more, two secret characters, Doctor B and Gon, and can also unlock third costumes for certain players! As well as this, there is Theatre mode, where you can watch the endings of each player, Tekken Force, where you get to fight in Streets of Rage-style against loads of enemies, and Tekken Ball, a game where you can play volleyball and hurt your opponent at the same time! There is also Arcade mode, Versus mode, Team Battle and Survival, many of which are 2-player (which is brilliant fun). Amazing graphics, superb gameplay, realistic lifespan and great secret features make Tekken 3 the best of the Tekken games. Even Tekken Tag on the PS2 can't beat Tekken 3. It's utterly incredible.
