Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Blizzard's release of StarCraft was eagerly anticipated by Real Time Strategy fans, and with good reason. Instead of two similarly powered enemies facing off, the three distinct races in StarCraft have unique capabilities and strategies. Everyone still competes in the RTS genre's typical race for resources, but that's the only shared trait. Terrans can move their bulky mechanised bases as necessary, while the reptilian Zerg grow their colonies and warriors from mutating larvae. Meanwhile, the noble Protoss warp in equipment from their home world using psionic powers.

Not only does Blizzard juggle the races' playability and match it with superb art and sound effects, it also weaves together an engrossing three-act plot. Early on, as a Terran Magistrate, you spend a breathtaking 30 minutes defending against a Zerg onslaught. As the story unfolds around you, you'll experience the Zerg's hive mentality, and decipher the mysterious Protoss by the game's dramatic conclusion.

Missions vary in scope and are effectively framed with dialogue, chapter screens, and in-mission exposition. Multiplayer is also very well represented by Blizzard's own free battle.net service. If you'd rather play over a local-area network, StarCraft will generously "spawn" up to seven copies so your friends can join in. --Jack Gardiner

Starcraft5
Forget Command & Conquer. Put Dune away in your attic. Starcraft is the best strategy game ever. It's so addictive and playable, and Internet games are great fun. If you're going to buy someone a strategy game, buy them this - they won't be disappointed.

Master of All Strategy Games5
I have, for many years, been a fan of strategy games. I will not waste words with this review, and I am not prone to exaggeration, so take this literally. While a few people (though not a very large amount) would disagree, in the view of myself and a vast amount of the gaming community Starcraft is unquestionably the greatest strategy game ever created. Slightly dated it may now be, but no other game has found such a pin perfect balance of strategy, gameplay, single-player storyline, multi-player intensity, depth, variety, replayability, and everythign else you could ever want. Any player keen on strategy should buy this game without hesitation and stick with it (it won't take long) until they've found out why its so many peoples top game of all time.

The best war strategy game ever!5
Starcraft is without a doubt the best war strategy game on the market at the moment. A wide variety of mission types, terrain and weapons. A game which requires forward thinking for effective counter-action. Whether brute force is your style of fighting or if you prefer the cunning stealthy approach, Starcraft has vehicles and soldiers to carry out the job. Three different species with widely varying special abilities.

Multiplayer over the Internet is great fun, battle.net provides hundreds of players from all over the world for you to play against, improve your skills against human opponents and compete in ladder matches to rise through the ranks and make your name well known.

A must buy if this is your type of game, nothing beats it...
