Chic fans take note - you might like this!
Produced by Nile Rodgers, this album contains a couple of Rodgers-penned tracks that are very reminiscent of the Chic sound. 'Magic of Love' is a slow, simple and haunting repetitive groove made even more like a Chic song thanks to the rhythmic staccatto backing vocals from Chic stalwarts Michelle Cobbs, Fonzi Thornton, Norma Jean, the Simm brothers, Brenda White-King and Curtis King (no Alfa or Luci or Luther though - shame.) 'Money Back Guarantee' is uptempo, again showcasing the Chicism style of a percussive chorus sung by the greatest backing singers ever. These tracks could easily sit on the last Chic album of the original lineup, 'Believer' and the rest of the tracks are interesting Rodgers productions far better than the other poppy album he did the same year for Sister Sledge. Sheena Easton's vocals are quite blank and expressionless at times which must be down to Rodger's direction, but this suits the mood of a song like 'Kisses'. I'm glad I discovered this hidden gem in the post-Chic catalogue of Nile Rodgers. Now how can we persuade someone to dig out the Chic-produced Johnny Mathis album from the vaults?
