below par cat2
cat stevens has always been a very frustrating artist for me. at his best, he is for sure one of the best, and he has turned out some truly beautiful songs over the years. however, even his classic albums were all a bit patchy, with the ordinary far outweighing the great. this album regrettably, is very ordinary and pedestrian. the title track itself is a rambling, directionless peice, and the rest of the album is not much better. the highlight is 'how many times?' but even that is far below his best work. if youre new to cat dont start here. seek out instead 'mona bone jakon' or 'tea for the tillerman' this album is not worthy of him

Alien4
With 1973's 'Foreigner,' Cat Stevens probed the opposite extreme of his most popular work, the short, sparsely-arranged, guitar-dominated songs of three years before. By now, he was using a standard band arrangement, preferring to use keyboards for his main texture, and the title track saw him exploring the 'suite' format beloved of many of his contemporaries. Far from being overloaded with bombast, however, 'Foreigner Suite' is light on its feet. Like all of the tracks here, it is unremarkable on the first listen, but grows on you with successive plays.

The subject matter is fairly limited, freedom, love and our environment being the main themes. Stevens's impassioned delivery makes up for some generally ordinary lyrics, while the dramatic feel of 'Later' makes it the most distinctive track. 'Foreigner' needs a little patience but is ultimately rewarding.

There Are No Words5
As a Cat Stevens fan I was drawn into the Foriegner and the pain and the suffering and anguish. 'I couldn't stand to face a day without you' pouring from every one of Cat Steven's veins with passion and understanding. He captured my feelings at the time and he still does. This one song allows us to view his love life exposed to the elements and backed by the pulsating beats from his faithful band. Well done Island, you're still making money now and though Foreigner brought an end to the commercial Cat Stevens it freed him into another world and we are all better for that. The supporting tracks do not let the album down either. A must if you are a true Cat Stevens fan.
