Amazon.co.uk Review
Mario Kart 64, one of the first games released for the Nintendo 64 platform, is an updated translation of the very popular Super Mario Kart for the Super NES (SNES). While the game clearly takes full advantage of the graphic power and speed of the N64, a few components that made the original so compelling have been left out of this release. Still, Nintendo's expertise at sucking players into the game world is strongly evident, and Mario Kart 64 offers enough challenges to keep players (especially casual gamers) entertained.
Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of a sputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150 cc engine, the game lets players race up to four of Nintendo's lovable characters on a variety of well-designed tracks. Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collecting power-ups and non-lethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels. Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game's fun: a strategically placed banana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shell launches their vehicle skyward and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneck speeds, if only for a moment. The multiplayer mode provides enormously chaotic fun for up to four players--flip it on at a party and watch the guests congregate around the screen. --Eric Twelker
Manufacturer's Description
Put the pedal to the metal in this worthy successor to that Super NES classic, Super Mario Kart. Mario Kart 64 boasts great graphics, tons of unique power-ups and a stunning 3-D version of the legendary Battle Mode. Great control--a trademark of all games from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto--will bring you back time and time again for free-wheeling fun.
Mario Kart 64 races eight familiar faces, including Mario, Bowser and Yoshi, on four progressively tougher four-track circuits. Wide curves and gentle banks mark the Mushroom Cup tracks. Your commute gets notably tougher on the Flower Cup, though. You'll have to dodge semis rumbling on Toad's Turnpike and bounding boulders on fog-bound Choco Mountain. Star Cup tracks range from the icy surfaces of Sherbet Land to the lava lakes of Bowser's Castle. The true test of karting competence, though, comes on the four tracks in Special Cup. Zip through the dark caves and green hillsides of Donkey Kong's Jungle Parkway, cling to the sheer cliffs of Yoshi Valley and hustle over haunted Banshee Boardwalk before tackling the longest track in the game: neon-lit Rainbow Road.
Mario Kart 64 offers two camera angles and three engine sizes: 50cc, 100cc and 150cc. You can gain even more speed by mastering the power slide technique or grabbing Super Star power-ups. Each kart has distinctive handling, acceleration and top speed capabilities. Light karts like Princess's smoothly steer through tight corners, but run the constant risk of getting flattened by heavy karts like Donkey Kong's. Shells that you fire at rival racers, bananas that make them skid out and lightning bolts that make 'em small and very slow are just a few of the game's unique power-ups.

Best multiplayer game
This game will last you until you die. Great fun, a 2 player race is best! Host of brilliant chracters, great races and probably the most fun you can have without getting off the sofa
Welcome To Mario Kart!! Are You Ready To Race?!
It's no surprise that I actually wanted to finish CTR-Crash Team Racing with its rival partner game, Mario Kart 64. Unlike Crash Team Racing, which took me a total of 6 months to finish, Mario Kart 64 just took me 1 month!
HMV were doing a Nintendo 64 clearout sale in 2001 and there were only two copies left of Mario Kart 64, so, since me and my brother were desperate we decided to purchase the last two copies of the game, and with all do respects, I've never had such entertainment!
Although Mario Kart 64 is not a very long game, it is probably the most remembered Mario Kart racing game of all, as it is the first Mario game that introduced 4 Player racing and battle modes which is very entertaining, especially when you have 3 of you're friends driving around the course with a few shells, bananas or stars up their sleeves!
Mario Kart 64 also introduced large racing tracks for users to really pick up the sweat. The Rainbow Road featured in this game is the best Rainbow Road course created for any Mario Kart game as not only does it feature flashing pictures of the racing drivers, but it is also the longest Mario Kart racing track to date as it take you almost 10 minutes to even just do 3 laps around the long extensive track!
My favourite item is the Star as it makes you go WHOOP SPEED!!! And it gives out a good invulnerability tune to go with the Star; I just know that when I get the item I feel really lucky!
Unfortunately though, Mario Kart 64 does give a few setbacks as it doesn't have any unlocks, except for the Extras Cup & the alternative title picture, and you may notice as well that a few bits and bobs in the game are not all 3D drawn! Nether-the-less I still say that this is a highly entertaining game and I think it's the best Mario Kart game Nintendo has ever done to date!
My Personal Game Score: 10/10: Fantastic, Brilliant, Superb
My Wish: My wish is to see Shiggy releasing this Nintendo 64 Classic game (Mario Kart 64) on the Nintendo Gamecube or another console, just as it is! No remakes, no fiddles, just as it is!! Or even a Cartridge Amplifier, so I can play Mario Kart 64 using a Gamecube controller and Memory Card!
Final Comments: At the end of the day, if you're after a racing game or something with some more Mario entertainment, I recommend you get Mario Kart 64! You just know that when you have a Star and when you activate it, you want to go WHOOP SPEED!!!
BUY IT AND PLAY IT ONE MORE TIME TODAY!!!!!

Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart 64 is still a classic and is a game I have donwloaded for the Nintendo Wii VC! It is still fun on your own or with mates and it is still looking good graphics wise! This is, among the Mario Kart games, one of the best, just behind Mario Kart DS! This still offers great karting action and great tracks to race on. Multi-player games on here is a right laugh and great fun! Get this while you can! A CLASSIC!
