Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
The intense soundtrack of Boiler Room is a fitting underscore for this movie, which pulses with the vigour of young, rich, amoral men wreaking havoc. This is not the anti-societal havoc of Fight Club, but the more deliberate mayhem that comes from greed run amok. The testosterone-junkie brokers of JT Marlin (the only female in the office is Abby, the receptionist and love interest, played by Nia Long) are out to make the sale, and whether that sale is legal or ethical doesn't matter.

Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a 19-year-old college dropout who strives for approval from his father (Ron Rifkin), a judge who is horrified that his son operates a 24-hour illicit casino. When an old friend visits the casino with a fellow broker, Davis is impressed by their wads of money and yellow Ferrari, and decides to join the firm. In no time he's making sales and settling into the groove of the office and all the after-hours perks, but the dream fades when Davis discovers the scam that is making all of the brokers wealthy beyond their dreams.

Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. However, as a fable of modern society and a nostalgic vehicle about the days of yuppies past, Boiler Room is right on the money. --Jenny Brown, Amazon.com --This text refers to another version of this video.

Synopsis
A supercharged ride through the cutthroat world of illegal stock selling, BOILER ROOM is fueled by an electric hip-hop soundtrack. Ribisi portrays Seth Davis, a college dropout who thinks he's going straight when he takes a job at J.T. Marlin, a stock firm located in Long Island. Seth wants nothing more than to be loved and respected by his father, a revered judge. As he learns the ropes and begins to make waves within the company, he discovers that J.T. Marlin might be a bogus operation after all. A last attempt at redeeming himself threatens to land both him and his father in jail. Younger's film is an adrenaline rush of a motion picture.

Not quite bubbling...4
I enjoyed the movie The Boiler Room. I found the storyline interesting, if a bit beyond believability (but then, when I think of my friend's lives, if they were presented on screen, most likely they would not be believable, either). The milieu of the stock trading floor is wonderfully portrayed, and it isn't until well into the film that one realises that this is not, in fact, a `legitimate' stock brokerage, but rather, a `chop shop' in which dummy corporations issue public stock for the purpose of building capital which can then be kept as the stock value plummets.

This is a film that fits the genre of not-quite-so-bad-guy-turns-good; the characterisations are fairly typical (mother, father, co-workers, etc.)-there is nothing really new here. There is an almost-happy ending, with the now-reformed good guy getting away just as the cavalry (in this case, the FBI) arrives to seize the bad guys. A fairly uni-dimensional film, do not go looking for deep insights or grand issues, or even great characters. But, it is a basic good story, something to give you an insight into trading floor personalities and the frenetic pace of activity that surrounds a high-powered brokerage.

I must confess I did not like the soundtrack; in fact, I found it intrusive and irritating. It was designed, I'm sure, to accentuate the trading floor/lifestyle pace and hard-hitting nature of the business world. I guess there is a reason why I'm not a stock broker; of course, the stock brokers I know prefer Brahms and Mozart.

Still, in all, I enjoyed this film. I can't say too much about, and am not quite sure why my overall opinion is one of enjoyment when there is so little explicitly redeeming about this film. I did, however, find Ben Afleck's bits in the film very interesting, particularly the job interview scene. I think I've interviewed at places like that before (except no one was telling me I would be a millionaire in three years).

If you like Vin, you'll love it!!3
Set in New Yoik, in the world of (not so) high finance, Boiler Room follows the story of Seth in his attempt to get his father's love, respect and ultimatly try to rich doing it.

Not a film for feminists or the discerning critic, this is a leave-your-brain-at-the-door film. But, lets face it, we all fancy one of them every now and then don't we? The cinematography is ok, as is the directing, the script is reasonable, the story line plausable, but the acting is superb!! This has to be one of Ben Affleck's best characters, although he doesn't have a huge part in the film.

Giovanni Ribbisi (The Gift, Gone in 60 Seconds) plays Seth with the right amount of naivity and brains. Vin Diesel, as per ususal looks mighty fine (he can fill a suit very nicely) you can easily believe he is Chris. My favourite scene is when he does his salesman bit on the phone (he plays a git very well).

The soundtrack is very NY Hip-hop and sets the mood for the film perfectly.

Not a film for the oldies, but ok and worth a peek, especially if you're a fan of Vin's.

Suprisingly, a 'chick' who liked this flick4
A film with some fantastic acting and passionate performances from some of last years most promising new stars, especially Giovanni Ribisi and Vin Diesel. Ben Affleck provides a charismatic performance and has an amazing screen presence (despite the fact that his total screen time can't be more than 10 minutes), a fast, clever and convincing script, (with a brand of humour its best not to take too seriously) and perfect sound track, all come together to create the testosterone packed world of the J T Marlin Stock Broker's. This film, however, often moves too quickly over important plot points and spends too long on relationships that go no where. And (with out giving anything away) I found the end a let down after the promising build up. This is however a fast moving film, with immense attitude, that might just convince you to hang up on the slick, phone salesmen...if you're lucky...or female.
