Level 42 doing what they do best - live !
This album sums up for me why Level 42 were so massive in the 1980s. They have always been a band that came across better in concert than on recorded albums. The musicianship on this album is awesome, particularly on Foundation and Empire and Kansas City Milkman, which are epics, especially live like this. The tracks may be unfamiliar to those who think only of Lessons In Love and Something About You as the sound of Level 42, but they are what made the band build up such a huge following in the clubs in the early 80s. I first heard this album all the way through and its momentum and atmosphere carries you along. If Level 42 have suffered adverse reviews in recent years with the 'fluffy dice' image, I defy anyone not to appreciate the skill and composition of this album. Truly masterful.
An absolute brit-funk classic
Even though this is the only live album that Level 42 have done, this certainly does not disappoint. If like me you are a fan of early Level 42 with the distinctly heavy slapped basslines and the fender rhodes style keyboards, then you're gonna love this, alright King and Lindup's vocals are a bit ropey but being a live album it's acceptable, however, the instrumentation is first rate, very tight and very lively, especially on 'Mr Pink' and 'Foundation and Empire'. This 1985 album is a must have for all Jazz-Funk fans everywhere.
Astonishing musicianship!
Just an absolute barmstormer form Thunderthumbs and the guys. Foundation and Empire will blow you away. One of the very best bands ever, and live just unstoppable.Go buy this if you love the slap bass, driving funk of the Level 42 you commercially know. You won't believe your ears and it's just a showpiece from one of the leading lights of the early Brit-funk movement, along with Incognito.
Superb!
