Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Boyz II Men are the granddaddies of R&B-inflected, pop-friendly, male harmony groups. The countless boy bands that sprang up in their wake all owe a huge debt to the Boyz. Here, they return to reclaim the world they helped to make from thehands of their younger disciples.
While there are a few concessions to the times (for instance, the Latin tinge to the "What's the Deal" and the opener "Beautiful Women"), the group sticks mostly to their well-established strengths; soulful, gently funky tunes powered by sweet harmonies and propelled by sensual, gently undulating rhythms. This is makeoutmusic first and foremost. The in-your-face hooks and production of other groups are not for these guys; they'd rather usher you gently into the bedroom and whisper sweet nothings over a quietly insistent backbeat.
Customer Reviews
These boyz are still the men!
Boyz II Men changed the face of RnB when the first came onto the scene and they're still among the best RnB artists around. Too much RnB today is "ooooh! I wanna freak you, baby" with recycled, tired lyrics and a weak, synthesised backing tune. You'll find nothing like that here. While making love is a prominent theme, as with any other Boyz II Men release, it's just got that little bit of substance that is lacking with the rest of the mediocre artists. They have written most of the tracks by themselves and have not disappointed. There is real originality both in the lyrics and the form of the songs; and that counts for so much. The other great thing is there are real instruments used and not just one at a time. The whole album just sounds more polished than most of the rest of the market.
It's mainly slow, but there are a few upbeat tracks like the excellent "Beautiful Women". "Pass You By" is an amazing song and I haven't stopped singing it for days at a time sometimes. The rest of the album is of very high quality too, but those are my favourites.
All in all, if you're looking for soulful, well produced and arranged RnB buy this album. You'd also do well to check out Brian McKnight's "Back At One" album.
Excellent production
when I first listened to the tracks, I thought that they were boring, until I heard them a few more times and the album is constantly on repeat now. It's dominated by slow tracks but there are a few up tempo one's, namely, "beautiful women" and "bounce, shake, move, swing." Other slushy tracks worth listening to are ; "Pass you by" "I do" "Thank you in advance" and the seriously dreamy "never go away." Buy the album and be blown away by the voices and lyrics!
A mind blowing album
I thought that Boyz II men would not be able to emulate the standard of their second album but they proved me wrong. I also didn't think that Boyz II Men could produce rocking dance tunes. They also proved me wrong. The album sounds great right from the first track. Watch out for the rocking 'Step on up'. They have indeed established themselves as world class song writers, not having to rely on Babyface and Terry Lewis. With their superb voices combined with superb lyrics, this album cannot be missed by true music fans. The song 'I do' just shows how songs should be properly sung by a group. They really set the standard for all those fake pretty boy bands out there!
