Age of Empires is a real-time strategy game where players build a great civilisation out of an Ice Age tribe over a period of 10,000 years. Players accomplish this by exploring their surroundings, conquering other civilisations and accumulating wealth. Key elements include building and controlling units and managing resources.

Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings starts the player out in the Dark Ages, roughly when Age of Empires ends. The goal remains the same: use advanced technology and troops to establish your civilisation's dominance. But now the player has better toys: each of the 13 civilisations have unique buildings, soldiers and advantages. The Teutons have Knights, for instance, while the Vikings have Berserkers. Winning the game requires military dominance or the construction of wonders of the world. The single-player game is fun, but most players love Age of Empires 2 for its wildly popular multiplayer component. Thousands of civilisations rise and fall every day as gamers around the world compete in matches over the Internet.

This bundle includes Age of Empires: Gold Edition, containing the originalAge of Empires and Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome Expansion, plus Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and Age of Empires II: The Conqueror's Expansion. If you haven't heard of the Age of Empires, you've been living in the Dark Ages, but that's cool because with this edition you really can live in the Dark Ages.

First came Age of Empires (Game of the Year 1997), closely followed by an add-on to increase the time span to encompass civilisation from its very dawn to the dominance of the Roman Empire. Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings covers the post-Roman Middle Ages--the Conquerors add-on provided the conquistadors and Attila the Hun.

These Microsoft games are a tour de force of exploration, organisation and, of course, battle campaigns. Along the way your population must construct buildings and boats, and learn to trade and make technological advances. Manuals for all four games are included, plus fold-out charts with wonderful artwork of the tools, weapons and personnel at your disposal ("I'll take an onager, some fervour and a brace of heavy camels today, please").

This well-presented Collector's Edition would make an excellent gift for anyone with a penchant for epic games who has so far, inexplicably, missed this series. But it also represent good value for those with an incomplete set and the ultimate collectable indulgence for serious fans because, unique to this collector's edition, is a sound track CD of surprisingly cool mood music taken from the games. --Mark Whitehorn

Everthing to do with Age of Empires in one box
This is the only game i'll ever need,it comes with 4 cd's,Age of Empires Gold Edition(Aoe1 and the add-on on one cd)Age of Empires 2,Aoe2 add-on. and a music cd which you can't get anywhere else. You can play on the gaming zone,and single player.Or on a network in your house.Each comes with a level editor,lots of levels,and a lot of fun.Also it is education so more people are likely to get it for you.Child or Adult its good.

Don't bother with the Collector's edition - Just buy AOE2
I bought this after playing Starcraft (one of the all time best RTS games around).

I loaded up the AOE1 and hated it instantly. The interface and graphics were poor when compared to SC. I did the first campaign then loaded AOE2 to see if that was any better.

And what a difference!!! All the irritating interface problems have gone away and the graphics are superb. The campaigns are not as good as in SC but the game play is. It has a strong online multiplayer community in which the game comes into its own. The recorded games feature is cool.

The Conquerors expansion set makes it even better.

My recommendation is not to buy the Collectors edition but just get the Age of Kings and The Conquerors expansion set instead.

This is my dream come true because i have only got age of empires part 1 so this pack came as the best thing since chocalate and it is brillient..sorry if you have purchased all of them individualy.By the way i gave my copy of age of empires which i had already to my cousin.
