Customer Reviews
An uplifting experience - a truly great collection.
For a relative beginner in the music of this legendary scene I can't imagine there's a better introduction than this. It's the first Northern Soul compilation that really made me feel just how thrilling this music must have been to hear for first time, and the passion it's inspired. The first side especially just flows from one brilliant cut to another. It's hard to pick standouts, but perhaps opening an ear to Sandi Sheldon's turbo-charged 'You're Gonna Make Me Love You' and Eddie Holman's soaring 'Eddie's My Name' reveal more about this music than 1000 words ever could. Beautifully packaged, with informative and entertaining track notes, this is a box of gold.
Pity Your Feet!
A near perfect Northern soul CD which is an ideal introduction for the novice, and a delight for the veteran that so many classics are put together on one collection. Standout tracks are too numerous to mention, so from a personal point of view it's a delight to have Doris Troy's "I'll do anything", Dells "Run for cover", Rose Battiste's "Hit & run", Earl Van Dyke's "All for you", Marvin Smith's "Have more time", Betty Everett's "Gettin' mighty crowded" and Patti Austin's version of "You never said a word" (check out the Yvonne Baker original) all together in one box. Warning to the uninitiated! This music is highly addictive and so far I've found no effective cure.
The best introduction to Northern Soul
An excellent primer to the northern soul scene to accompany a book of the same title by Mike Ritson and Stuart Russell on the rare '60s soul phenomenon that became the biggest English underground music movement of the '70s. The 2-CD 50-track collection starts with northern's mod roots (represented by scooter boy faves The In Crowd by Dobie Gray and Betty Everett's Getting Mighty Crowded), moving on to feature the top tracks from such legendary clubs as the Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca, Manchester's Twisted Wheel, Stoke's Torch, and Wolverhampton's Catacombs. Highlights include Doris Troy's infectious dancer I'll Do Anything, Earl Van Dyke's groovy organ-powered All For You, Sandi Sheldon's supercharged You're Gonna Make Me Love You, the sublime Run For Cover by The Dells, and the new era '70s soul sound of The Carstairs' It Really Hurts Me Girl. This set is essential for both those new to northern soul and to the devotees who will see this as an opportunity to rest vinyl that they have worn paper thin by repeated plays.
