nice but not great
the blues, the blues, where to start with the blues? theres so many old blues artists with varying styles and deliveries. john hurt is a bit of a curio in that he sits on the fence directly between blues and country, more so than any other blues man. and in doing so, john betrays the true legacy of the blues - basically, although purists, sycophants and brown-nosers alike will no doubt scream their disapproval, the blues was created by the black americans as a direct result of being exposed to country and folk music. just as ragtime and jazz was influenced by early western swing. this album is a fine example. on most of these songs, all you need is a steel guitar and a two-step drumbeat and you have bob wells circa 1945 western swing. lets get it right - the blues comes from country and folk music. which in itself was taken from early european settlers , primarily british, irish and french. so if you want to get to the heart of where rock and roll comes from - thats where youve got to look! this is not to deny the importance of this music , but i think its time it was all put into perspective. this collection really proves my point.
to say its an endurance test to sit through this is an under-statement. the material is very samey throughout. hurt plays a lovely guitar for sure and the production here is beautiful. clear and pristine. however most of the time hurt sings in an almost incomprehensible drawl. as a musical landmark this is an important collection. but at the end of the day. its not really that good. dont be fooled by reviewers telling you how everything these old bluesmen did was musical perfection. as with 95% of all musical styles, most of it is pretty damn ordinary if not boring. its the other 5 per cent that makes music worthwhile. the moments where the songs become works of art in themselves. but theyre hard to find. and you wont find them here
Truly Wonderful
It sounds over the top but I can only describe this collection as 'truly wonderful.'
The digital remastering has left the orginal colour and warmth of the recordings intact while producing a high quality noise free sound quality.
The songs are delightful and I agree wholly with the previous reviewers comments.
It is also excellent value for money with three CDs in the set.
