Cosmos DVD
I bought this 7 disc boxed DVD direct from the USA via "carlsagan.com" because I could not wait for a UK release. I paid almost twice the price of the current UK price. Am I annoyed? No, this masterpiece of science on TV at it best, is worth four time the price!!! With a "Region 0" DVD Code Carl would have approved ;-)
Billions and Billions
The total number of stars in the universe is greater than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet Earth.
This tv series will expand your mind and heart. Late Carl Sagan was an amazing person who aside from this Cosmos also wrote a few non-fiction books as well as a novel "Contact" (also recommended). Not only was he very familiar with the astronomy science but also well educated in other aspects of science and art such as history, literature, mythology and so on, and this tv series is a marvellous mixture of facts, stories and dreams that will make you feel so alive. To mention a few examples, Carl talks about the ancient cultures, the gigantic library of Alexandria and how mankind first measured the size of the Earth. He explains how astronomers and scientists through the ages discovered, adopted and evolved the solar system, the milky way and beyond. You don't need to have a university degree to follow this series, because one of Carl's talents was the ability to explain things in a way comprehensible to "normal" people, and I remember seeing these programmes when I was only 7 or 8 years old and still was amazed, never bored. The quality of the films are good even today, with wonderful awe-inspiring images not only space pictures but also images from life on earth, cultures, nature and people from all over the planet. Also, this dvd comes with recent updates where Carl presents the latest research that has happened since the series was first made. Each episode is about an hour long, so you never get bored. Music from Vangelis among others add to the general mood of this being something worth remembering.
An extraordinary documentary
Carl Sagan who was the man responsible behind the Voyager Missions ( that brought us back all these great pictures of our solar system ) and the SETI programme , presents a documentary that looks at the universe , evolution and our great philoshophical questions with humility and a simply beatiful scientific yet humane approach. Filmed in the 80s in the peak of the cold war it conveys a wonderfull message ; life in the form as we know it here on earth is an extreme rarity and its down to us to make the most out of it and not destry each other. The effects are a bit outdated and so are some scientific answers however it is a documantary that not easily forgotten and so is the music by Vangelis ( So long ago,so clear fromt the album Heaven and Earth) that suits the theme and the ethos of these documentaries perfectly. Worth having and to show your children.
