Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Parisien DJ Deep's compilation for the Respect is Burning series throws down a challenge to the slew of 2001 house offerings. Taught how to mix by the godfather of French house, Laurent Garnier, DJ Deep invites us to view the landscape through his own soulful house spectacles. It's an invitation worth accepting for this absolutely firing 13 track album. From the twitchy house evangelism of Kerri Chandler's "I'm not dreaming" to the funked up metallic meltdown of Needs' "Brother", Deep is helping to stamp the international flavour on the consciousness of hedonistic house heads everywhere. Unlike a lot of deep house compilations, there isn't a dull track in sight. Last Tribes of Ibadan Part 2's "Avareh" gives the afro-beat house sound a friendly tech-funk makeover. Masters At Work's Little Louis Vega continues to inspire with that dubbed-out golden oldie, "Life Goes On" and the freaky afro-latin gospel-tinged sound of "Elements of Life". Later on in the mix, Kenny Bobien is on winning Ten-City style form with the tender, "Father" and Blaze show yet again why they are unchallenged doyens of gospel-soul house. In fact, hard-edged grooves, crisp beats and sustained ecstasy are what all these tracks have in common. This is deep House as it should be: musical, vibrant and as good at home as in a warm up/late night session. --Reuben Dessay

indispensible soulful house5
What can I say except for vocal, soulful, emotional, funky, uplifting, deep house! You won't find a better example of the above anywhere in the world than on this collection, brilliantly upt together by Garage City favourite DJ Deep. It isn't necessary to namedrop but if you hear Louie Vega, Blaze, Kerri Chandler and Kenny Bobien all in the same place then you dont need to know any more. If you aren't gagging to buy this yet, then you're in the wrong place!!

Have faith in San Antonio5
I bought this album whilst browsing a record shop in 2002 during an autumn break in San Antonio, Ibiza. It was pure blind faith, but I just knew it would be good because Master's At Work featured. Every track's a winner, but some are stronger. From the hypnotic intro track "I'm not dreaming" I was transported back to good times gone. Osunlade's "Cantos a Ochun & Oya" has great timing and beautifully intersperses Afro and Latin grooves, as does "Avareh" later on. The haunting but compulsive lyrics of " Misery" took me some time to get word perfect, nonetheless I sang on. I thought I had died and gone to heaven with both Blaze tracks as they were soulful, hearty and bass-ically intelligent -never been one for Gospel, but now am converted!!! As for Kenny Bobien's "Father" I do believe in him. The pleasant and gently relaxing "Winter's Blessing" epitomises everything I love about the instrumental house. DJ Deep fantastically mixed these tracks and helped me to rediscover my love of 'proper' house music; I still feel I did my fellow travellers a favour in my hotel when I played it 3 times continuously in one night. This is still in the top five of my playlist nearly three years later.

i always start this cd at track 4- which is a nice intro track, after that its all superb quality soulful house. what stops this from getting 5 stars is the first track which imho doesn't fit with the rest of the tunes (wailing diva- whereas rest is deep, fun classy house), track 2 is nice but is sandwiched between the annoying 1 and the painful vocal on track 3 (3 is a popular tune so maybe its just me but i can't stand that afro vocal- its horrible). don't let 2 bad eggs spoil a set of absolute gems though.
