Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
If Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual evokes memories dominated mostly by her cartoonish image, then try to get over it so you can pay attention to the music. Put simply, Cyndi Lauper has a wonderful, emotive voice. Her vocals have an impish quality, but there's also tremendous strength, articulation and nuance. Who would disagree that "Time After Time" (later covered by both Everything but the Girl and Miles Davis, if you need further proof of her credibility) is as heartstring- tugging as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is frivolous, or that "All Through the Night" is as longing as "She-Bop" is intense? The instrumental arrangements are quite inventive and rich, and although the musicality is pointedly 1980s, the album sounds more winsome than dated. The title of Lauper's debut isn't self-deprecating or even self- parodying; it's self-congratulatory. Listen to it again, and you'll find this pleasure to be far from guilty. --Beth Bessmer

CD Description
Once the orange-haired Lauper dropped the contrived, dumb, cutesy, lispy broad persona, Cyndi Lauper was seen as a credible artist, and has subsequently become highly respected asa terrific songwriter. On this, her pen was sharpened with the magnificent song of unconditional love, "Time After Time", a track that has since been recorded by others, includingbeautiful cover versions by Miles Davis and the jazz husband-and-wife duo, Tuck And Patti. Less sophisticated, but of equal fun, is "She Bop", and then there are well-chosen covers such as Jules Shear's "All Through The Night" and Prince's"When You Were Mine".

Customer Reviews

Cyndi at her unusual best....5
I distinctly remember, at the tender age of 12, receiving as a gift the vinyl version of She's So Unusual in 1984. Cyndi Lauper was all the rage then; her garish, multicoloured costumes in her frequently aired videos made her one of the more popular female artists in 1984 (possible even more popular than Madonna in that year). Many years after last listening to that vinyl record, I became reaquainted with She's So Unusual on this CD. The music is as dynamic and fresh today as it was back in 1984. I'm sure most people are familiar with the gimicky Girls Just Want to Have Fun, but the rest of the tracks are just as wonderful in their own way. From the beautifully sad ballad Time After Time to the bouncy She Bop, this album is a wonderful showcase for Cyndi Lauper (who unfortunately has never been able to duplicate this first success), and for 80's pop in general. Also included are live versions of Money Changes Everything, She Bop and All Through The Night - excellent additions for the serious fan.

Buy it...and step back in time to a wonderful era in music....

start of an ICON5
a fantastic debut album by the legendary Cyndi Lauper, all songs here are on the top of the toppest form.
i love that it has a strange blend of retro pop with a punk and rebellious style that everyone can relate to and enjoy all of the songs on offer here.
im glad that she is still going strong delivering some powerful songs(buy BRING YA TO THE BRINK).
classic songs of hers are on offer here from,Time after Time-She Bop all songs deliver sharp uniqueness that is unfortunately absent from many new artists.
Cyndi manages to capture soul in her music and delivers to us on many levels, the tunes here are as sharp as ever, and the songs really make you wanna dance.

Debut album remains Cyndi's biggest success5
Cyndi had been working as a professional singer for a few years, unknown to the public, before hitting the big time with this album, which yielded four international hit singles, all of which made the top five in America. This album of raucous rock music sold several million copies so, though it is not my favorite Cyndi album, this was easily her most successful

The first two hits (Girls just want to have fun, Time after time) made the top three in Britain although the net two (She bop, All through the night) were only minor UK hits. The title track is a gender-adapted cover of a song originally written in 1929. Thus, even on this album, Cyndi showed an interest in songs of a bygone age, something that became much more obvious with her more recent covers album, At last. Another notable song here is When you were mine (written by Prince).

Cyndi was hailed as the next megastar following the phenomenal success of this album. It was not to be - Madonna became the megastar instead - but Cyndi has recorded some great music since then including the follow-up, True colors, as well as an outstanding Christmas album (Have a nice life) and a wonderful collection of standards (At last).
