Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
And so, by 1990, it seemed that no band in Britain remembered harmonies and jangly guitars and The Beatles and playing tapes backwards and psychedelic pop except The La's. And the La's weren't doing much about it--they spent so long in the studio moving faders up and down a millimetre that Go! Discs had to break into the studio, steal the tapes and release the album against the band's wishes. Chief La Lee Mavers still asserts The La's is a mess; nothing like he'd intended, but to everyone else in the universe it sounds glorious: with it's chiming Byrds-ian guitars and flat Mersey back-beat, "Timeless Melody" is the most aptly named song since Dodgy's "Good Enough;" and as the 60 million cover-versions constantly prove, "There She Goes" is the loveliest smack ode since the Strangler's "Golden Brown". The rest is never less than classic, whatever it's creator might mutter into his pint. --Caitlan Moran

CD Description
'The La's' is the eponymous debut album from the influential Liverpool band of the same name. Whilst this is the only album that the band ever released, its distinctive mix of 60's beat pop melodies and dogstar-style guitars has been influential on many bands since its release, most notably Oasis. This remastered version includes several bonus tracks alongside the singles 'There She Goes' and 'Timeless Melody'.

Customer Reviews

Quite simply a classic5
About 10 years ago, at the height of Oasis and Britpop etc, I purchased this album simply so that I could have my own copy of There She Goes, which was the only song that I played from it at the time. After hearing a Lee Mavers story a couple of years ago, older, wiser and intruiged, I decided to give the album a listen, and it has rarely left my CD-player. It is quite simply one of the greatest guitar-rock/pop albums of all time, and can stand up against the best of them despite what Lee Mavers may say!
From the opening Son of a Gun to the closing Looking Glass, the album is filled with fantastic melodies and deceptively complex lyrics which in my opinion elevate this album to classic status. Great uplifting pop songs like Timeless Melody, Feelin, and songs that appear bright until you scratch the surface to reveal layers darkness (such as I Can't Sleep and There She Goes) ensure that this is one album that demands attention.

15 years after its release it still sounds exciting and fresh, The La's LP is the yardstick against which all other melodic rock albums should be judged.

Undoubted Classic5
This is one of the most underarated album ever. This album has not received enough recognition it deserves. Special Credit has to go to Lee Mavers, Songwriter and singer. This would be one of the best albums in the past generation, if life was different

They create a 60's sound through their music (Pop music). The Strong influence in their music is the Beatles, (spot the guitar riff in 'feeling'). But, The La's themselves have influenced future bands, like Oasis and the Coral. This just shows the magnitude of their one and only album.
Each song except two, last under 3 minutes. But these 3 minutes songs are packed with pure genius, oozing with utter brillance. All of the songs contain a sense of Originality. The stand out tracks are 'timeless melody', and 'there she goes'.
The true test of any album though, is the aspect of longitivety. The La's have achieves that with flying colours.
So do yourself a favour, buy the album. An album which will be sitting proudly in your record collection for many years.

Excellent4
I must confess that I was originally let down by this album, when I brought it all those years ago. I had always though that There she goes was possibly the greatest moment in pop history. Being young and stupid I expected all of the album to have the same bitter sweet poppy sound, how foolish.Lee Mavers in retrospect took, the mersey beat, the liverpool skiffal (excuse my Dyslexia) tradition and turned it into something rather special. Liberty ship, Freedom song and looking Glass are my particular favourites of mine. The album has a seemless continuity that most other modern albums lack. Its very much like the Stone Roses debut in that the album flows from song to song, each one crafted to fit its place. I am often told that the album is famously under produced, that it was never intended to be released as an album, and that Mavers was never happy with it. Well that may well be, but the La's had soul and it comes out in there music, all this is helped by the fact that Mavers is singing about dark places in his soul. Lee Mavers was or still is one of british musics lost greats and this album deserves to be cherished.
